Staff Diagnostics Engineer

– Join to apply for the Staff Diagnostics Engineer role at

Figure .

Figure is an AI robotics company developing autonomous general‑purpose humanoid robots. The goal is to ship humanoid robots with human‑level intelligence. The robots are engineered to perform a variety of tasks in the home and commercial markets. Based in San Jose, CA, the position requires 5 days/week in‑office collaboration.

We are seeking a Staff Diagnostics Engineer to define, architect, and validate the on‑board diagnostics framework for Figure’s humanoid robot platform. The role is responsible for developing the systems that monitor robot health, detect faults, and enable serviceability across compute, power, actuation, locomotion, and sensing systems. You will collaborate with hardware, firmware, controls, behaviors and systems integration teams to ensure every subsystem reports accurate, actionable diagnostic data in real time.

Key Responsibilities

Define the architecture, requirements, and KPIs for on‑board diagnostics, fleet health, and reliability tracking.

Develop frameworks for fault detection, health monitoring, event logging, and fleet‑wide telemetry across all subsystems.

Collaborate with firmware and hardware teams to embed diagnostic hooks, self‑tests, and validation coverage, driving root‑cause analysis and closed‑loop feedback to design updates.

Build service tools and analytics dashboards that enable scalable diagnostic readiness, maintenance planning, and fleet operations.

Mentor engineers developing diagnostic logic, tools, and infrastructure while interfacing with systems integration, manufacturing, and field service.

Requirements

8+ years developing diagnostics, telemetry, or fault‑management systems for complex electromechanical or embedded platforms.

Strong understanding of system‑level fault behavior, sensor validation, and communication protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, or UDS.

Proficiency in Python, C++, or similar languages for data analysis, validation, and automation.

Skilled with test instrumentation, data logging, and failure analysis tools to support root‑cause investigations.

Proven ability to architect and validate cross‑disciplinary diagnostic systems; degree in Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Systems Engineering (or equivalent).

Bonus Qualifications

Previous ownership of diagnostic systems in Autonomous Vehicles, Robotics, Automotive or Aerospace.

Familiarity with OBD‑II, UDS, or similar diagnostic standards and data frameworks.

Experience developing fleet‑scale telemetry and analytics systems for fault detection and trending.

Background in embedded firmware development or hardware‑in‑the‑loop testing.

Leadership experience defining diagnostic strategies or developing service engineering capabilities.
