Wastewater Enterprise Overview SFPUC’s Wastewater Enterprise (WWE) operates and maintains San Francisco’s combined sewer system, protecting public health and the environment. WWE’s scope covers 1,000+ miles of pipe, 24 miles of transport and storage facilities, 34.6 billion gallons of wastewater per year, and includes three all‑weather treatment plants, one wet‑weather facility, 32 pump stations, eight transport/storage facilities, and 34 combined sewer discharge structures. WWE also produces biosolids, a nutrient‑rich soil‑like product used as a synthetic fertilizer replacement.
Project Name WW 647 R Biosolids Digester Facilities Project / Machinist Support
Job Description This position performs preventive, routine and emergency maintenance/repair of various wastewater equipment and related system components. The incumbent operates precision equipment and responds to trouble calls associated with wastewater plant equipment and pump‑station equipment. Work may require physical effort, confined‑space entry, after‑hours shifts, staff shortages, safety compliance, or project participation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Set up and operate a variety of machine tools, including stationary and portable manual tools and CNC machine tools such as mills, lathes, drills, saws, etc.
Rebuild, refinish, modify, and/or fabricate component replacement parts for pumps, valves, generators, cranes, special tools, compressors, pipelines, gearboxes, motors, bearings, bushings, shafts, and miscellaneous items throughout the wastewater facilities.
Maintain and repair a variety of instruments and mechanical equipment, including valves, castings, and various metal parts.
Diagnose, install, inspect, and test machinery, parts, and equipment.
Read and interpret schematic drawings, blueprints, and plans.
Prepare and maintain records and forms documenting work performed.
Dismantle and assemble light and heavy machines and/or equipment.
Manufacture/fabricate parts based on samples.
Perform all related duties as assigned.
Work Location 750 Phelps Street, San Francisco, CA 94124.
How to Qualify We are looking for candidates who meet the following:
Experience
Completion of a recognized four‑year (4) Machinist’s apprenticeship program and two (2) years of verifiable full‑time experience as a journey‑level Maintenance Machinist performing duties equivalent to Job Code 7332.
OR a combination of trade‑related training (certificate program or military training program) and full‑time verifiable experience as a journey‑level Maintenance Machinist totaling six (6) years.
Note: Trade‑related training includes programs such as machine‑tool technology. Experience solely as a CNC Machinist, NC Machinist, or Machine Operator without manual maintenance experience will not be considered.
License and Certification Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California driver’s license.
Certification Substitution Completion of a CA Division of Apprenticeship Standards recognized Maintenance Machinist apprenticeship program, as evidenced by issuance of a Certificate of Completion, will substitute for the six (6) years of combined work experience.
Verification of Education and Experience Every application is reviewed to confirm that the applicant meets the minimum qualifications listed above. Applicants may be required to submit verification of qualifying education and experience at any point during the recruitment and selection process. Falsification or attempted deception on the application may result in disqualification.
Drug Testing Requirement Applicants for this classification who are not currently employed by the City and County of San Francisco in a safety‑sensitive position represented by Auto Machinist, Local 1414, must pass pre‑employment drug and alcohol testing. All employees in this classification may also be subject to testing upon reasonable suspicion or after a work‑related accident. Applicants with a positive pre‑employment drug test result will be restricted from hiring in safety‑sensitive positions for six months following the date of the positive test.
