Position Summary Provide assistance to the Barn Manager with the care and management of the UGA Equestrian Team equine athletes. Responsibilities include equine health and maintenance, inventory and organization of supplies, oversight and development of part‑time/student employees, assistance with competitions, and maintaining a premier NCAA equine program. Coordinate with the College of Veterinary Medicine and other veterinary practices to provide equine health care. May represent the barn in meetings and assume duties as directed in the absence of the manager.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; driving is a responsibility.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.; must perform bending, stooping, and other physical demands.
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
Experience with the care, management, and maintenance of horses, including part‑time and student workers.
Knowledge of veterinary care procedures, medication administration, and therapeutic treatments.
Ability to maintain cleanliness and safety in barn and pasture environments.
Strong supervisory and mentoring skills for part‑time and student employees.
Effective communication with internal and external veterinary partners.
Physical Demands Work in a barn environment with the need to bend, stoop, lift approximately 50 lbs., and operate mounted equipment. Requires the ability to drive when necessary.
Duties & Responsibilities Veterinary Care
– Assist with medication administration, injury treatment, deworming, vaccinations, coggins/EIA tests, Adequan and joint injections, and scheduling veterinary, chiropractic, and farrier appointments.
Therapeutic Rehabilitation & Equine Exercise
– Manage medical treatments and therapeutic care under guidance, including fungal treatments, cold hosing/icing, bandaging, bathing & grooming, Equiband, laser therapy, Bemer treatments, massage pad treatments, and exercise management of hot walker treatments.
Health & Maintenance
– Daily care of equines: feeding, hay, water, stall cleaning, pasture management, nutrition management, transportation, and general horse care.
Inventory & Organization
– Maintain inventory of medications, medical supplies, and grooming supplies; ensure proper storage and access to all items.
Cleanliness & Aesthetic
– Assist with overall cleanliness and organization of barn, pastures, feed rooms, and tack rooms to ensure safety.
Oversight & Development of Part‑Time/Student Employees
– Supervise and mentor employees in safe handling practices and minor wound or skin condition treatments.
Competitions
– Assist with horse management, facility preparation, relocation for competitions, medication administration, pre and post‑meet therapies, critical care, and return to routine.
Other duties as assigned.
