Assistant Civil Engineer

Public Works – Capital Improvement Project Team The City of Rancho Cordova has a robust 5‑year Capital Improvement Project Program with over 80 projects totaling more than $1 B. The projects span roadway/transportation, alternatives transportation, stormwater, and city‑wide initiatives. The Capital Improvement Project Team delivers critically important infrastructure that supports a growing community of more than 81,000 residents.
Responsibilities
Delivery of Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects
Construction management
Project management
Engineering design
It is expected that the assistant will support the planning, design, and construction of capital improvement projects, supervise and collaborate with engineering consultants, perform calculations and estimates, and ensure compliance with city requirements and codes.
Who We're Looking For The ideal candidate is an EIT with experience in delivering capital improvement projects, solving engineering challenges, construction management skills, and communicating with engineering consultants. Experience in capital infrastructure project delivery and construction is highly desired. In addition to technical skills, the candidate should work well in a team environment, possess strong written and verbal communication, and be passionate about serving the community.
Qualifications Knowledge Of
Municipal engineering design and construction programs
Materials, techniques, and maintenance of public works and utilities
Surveying, drafting, CAD, and modeling techniques
Professional public works engineering developments and trends
Office procedures and computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases)
English usage and business correspondence
Occupational health and safety standards
Contract management and administration
Real‑estate and right‑of‑way acquisition procedures
Ability to
Perform engineering computations and prepare plans and studies
Analyze work papers and reports
Interpret technical and numerical information
Apply policies, regulations, and engineering procedures
Prepare cost estimates and technical reports
Operate office equipment and software
Provide responsive customer service to the community
Maintain integrity and accountability in work
Prioritize tasks and coordinate activities simultaneously
Contribute collaboratively to a team effort
Develop innovative ideas and improve methods for project completion
Communicate clearly in writing and orally
Build effective working relationships
Minimum Qualifications Guidelines Education/Training
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field from an accredited institution.
Experience
One (1) year of technical engineering experience is desirable.
Capital Improvement Project specific experience is highly desirable.
License or Certification
Valid California driver’s license.
Valid Engineer‑In‑Training Certificate with the State of California (or the ability to obtain one).
