Lab Technician
Job Description This position offers an exciting opportunity to work as a Lab Technician, focusing on testing raw milk tanker samples. The role requires commitment from Sunday to Tuesday, 3am-3pm, and every other Wednesday. This is a contract‑to‑hire position based on performance. All testing is conducted in the Main Lab using specific lab equipment.
Responsibilities
Perform Animal Drug Residue testing (Appendix N certification required, which will be provided).
Conduct Added water/Cryo testing to obtain the freezing point.
Execute DMC testing by obtaining samples, staining slides, and analyzing results under a microscope for bacteria and other micro‑organisms.
Measure the percentage of titratable acidity in milk using sodium hydroxide to assess taste, shelf‑life, and quality.
Conduct flavour/odor tests by heating samples, cooling, and then tasting/smelling (without swallowing).
Perform Butterfat and Total Solids testing using FOSS 120 equipment.
Execute pH/Acidity and Spin testing using a centrifuge.
Autoclave equipment and monitor silo/cooler temperatures.
Perform titrations on chemicals used in/on plant equipment.
Verify paperwork and conduct homogenisation testing.
Perform equipment start‑up testing using ATP.
Verify scale calibrations daily.
Plate samples and read plates.
Enter data into QA Studio.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
Knowledge of microbiology, pipetting, and laboratory procedures.
Familiarity with GMPs, food manufacturing, and quality assurance practices.
Proficient in using lab equipment such as Charm unit/incubator, Cryoscope, Microscope, and FOSS 120.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Biology or related science is preferred but not necessary.
Experience in dairy or other food manufacturing is advantageous.
Open to candidates from the pharmaceutical industry.
Work Environment The role is based in a beverage manufacturing facility, specifically focused on dairy products like milk, half & half, eggnog, and heavy whipping creams. The environment demands adherence to laboratory GMPs and SOPs, with a focus on documentation and quality assurance. Hands‑on training is provided for learning equipment.
Job Type & Location Contract to Hire position based out of Frederick, Maryland.
Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
