Salary range (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs): $69,868.00 - $103,849.00 per year.

Summary The Ophthalmology Health Technician works within the eye care team at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center or a community‑based outpatient clinic.

The role oversees and coordinates patient flow, trains team members, communicates effectively with Optometrist/Ophthalmologist, ensures compliance with best practices, and promotes a collaborative work environment.

Qualifications

U.S. citizenship only.

Minimum of one year of experience in a health‑care field (e.g., nursing, medical assistant, health technician) OR

At least two years of education above high school with a minimum of six semester hours directly related to a health‑care field, or an associate’s degree in a health‑care–related major.

Or an equivalent combination of experience and education (examples: six months experience with one year of education, six months experience plus a health‑care technician course, or completion of an independent Ophthalmic Medical Assisting course).

Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) issued by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).

Based on experience, candidates may be qualified for GS‑5, GS‑6, GS‑7, or GS‑8 grades.

Experienced candidates must demonstrate the required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) for the grade applied for.

Physical Requirements • Lift and/or carry up to 45 pounds intermittently. • Push/pull up to 45 pounds intermittently. • Stoop, squat, and kneel occasionally. • Perform overhead work intermittently. • Prolonged walking and standing (up to 4 hours per day) and sitting (up to 2 hours per day).

Duties

Conduct comprehensive patient interviews to gather medical and ocular histories.

Measure and record visual acuities, spectacles specifications, and refractive parameters.

Perform occluder patience, contrast‑sensitivity, color‑vision, ETDRS, and stereo‑acuity tests.

Conduct glare testing and visual‑field assessments using automated objective refractometers.

Assist physicians with specialized procedures (VFT, corneal topography, OCT, slit‑lamp photography, fundus photography, biometry, ultrasound, fluorescein angiography, keratometry, tonometry).

Prepare and stock examination rooms; ensure supplies and medications are current and restock post‑operative documents.

Maintain a sterile environment and facilitate patient movement to reduce delays.

Distribute and balance workload among staff technicians; monitor task status and adjust priorities as needed.

Retrieve and organize clinical documents and images for upcoming clinic sessions.

Provide training to less experienced staff and stay updated on procedures, policies, and technological advances.

Execute additional health‑technician responsibilities as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday–Friday 8:00 am–4:30 pm (telework not available).
