Specialist III, Adult Education & Literacy Advising – Grant Funded Location:

250 N. Sam Houston Pkwy E., Houston, TX 77060.

Campus:

LSC-Houston North Greenspoint (with work split among LSC-Houston North Greenspoint, LSC-University Center Montgomery, and other LSC campuses/off‑site community partner locations).

Purpose and Scope:

The Specialist III, Advising (AEL Grant) provides initial advising for students on grant‑funded programs and certificates specific to workforce, GED, or continuing education classes. Responsibilities include registering students in all grant‑funded Continuing Education classes and supporting staff with clerical, analytical, administrative, and operational duties under general supervision.

Essential Job Functions

Welcome, greet, and provide general support to all Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) prospective students and visitors in a polite and professional manner.

Advise visitors on available and upcoming orientation and testing session dates and provide detail on eligibility requirements per AEL program.

Answer multiple phone lines, take messages, and/or transfer callers; record messages from voicemail and return phone calls in a timely manner.

Register and drop students for AEL classes including High School Equivalency or GED, English as a Second Language, Workforce Education and Training Certificates, and Developmental Education.

Provide students with information and proper referrals to available resources and services on campus.

Manage and reply to all departmental communications including Remind and any directed to Adult Education and Literacy in a timely manner.

Collect and process necessary documents required to enroll students in AEL High School Equivalency or GED preparation classes; provide students with oral and written instruction to take the TABE or Tests of Adult Basic Education exam.

Support managers and all other AEL staff to ensure efficient operations.

Work with the AEL Program Manager to ensure community needs are met.

Serve as a backup tester and advisor to assist current and prospective students with eligibility requirements and advising on course selection in a goal‑driven environment.

Contact students, instructors, and staff regarding class cancellations or postponement.

Perform other reasonable, related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong attention to detail.

Proficiency with software products and ability to work on multiple projects.

Ability to document expenses.

Physical Abilities:

The work is sedentary. The employee sits comfortably, with occasional walking, standing, bending, carrying light items, or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required.

Work Schedule and Conditions

Equipment includes a PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, and general office equipment.

Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position.

Work is performed in a climate‑controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards.

Some evenings and weekends may be required.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and at least 3 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate degree or higher.

Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Bilingual (English/Vietnamese).

Best Plus 2.0 Administrator certification.

Best Literacy Administrator certification.

Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) Administrator certification.

Salary:

$33,540 – $38,571 annually.
