Responsibilities Under supervision, perform semi-skilled and skilled cleaning, housekeeping, and general maintenance tasks 80% of time. Duties include:
Operate vacuum cleaners, buffers, wall‑washing machines, wet/dry vacuums, and floor‑scrubbing machines.
Strip, seal, buff, wax, and polish floors and building surfaces.
Make reports on building and equipment needs.
Maintain security of assigned areas and lock unoccupied spaces when cleaning.
Assist in setting up and dismantling special equipment for functions.
Load and unload large trash receptacles and dumpsters.
Perform specialized cleaning in laboratories, surgical, isolation, and terminal areas as required.
Lead a small group of custodians (usually less than five).
Required Qualifications
Ability to use and care for janitorial supplies and equipment.
Able to observe and use safe working conditions.
Understand and apply university and department policies and procedures.
Exercise sound judgment in solving problems.
Accomplish work within deadlines; handle more than one project at a time.
Work effectively in a team environment and follow instruction from supervisors.
Desirable Qualifications
At least 1 year of custodial experience or combination of experience, training, and education, preferably in school or business setting.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing in English.
Basic computer usage skills and knowledge.
Special Conditions of Employment
May be required to wear a UCSB-provided uniform.
Days and hours may vary to meet the operational needs of the department.
Maintain a valid CA driver’s license, a satisfactory DMV record, and enrollment in the DMV Employer Pull‑Notice Program.
Satisfactory conviction history background check.
