The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center is recruiting for the position of Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic - located in Charleston - South Carolina. The incumbent serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic in a complex medical facility that is constantly evolving within a highly complex and competitive geographic area.
Qualifications
- EPA Universal Certification: Current, approved, and compliant with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act.
- Driver’s License: Current and valid state‑issued driver’s license (no photographs, submit license when requested).
- Experience and Training: Evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to demonstrate necessary knowledge, skills, and ability to perform duties. Include detailed descriptions on resume. Volunteer work counts towards qualification if it builds relevant competencies.
- Screen‑out Element: Meet the minimal acceptable qualification requirement to be considered for further rating.
Duties
- Perform all necessary repairs and preventive maintenance on all HVAC and refrigeration equipment within the Medical Center and other assigned duties.
- Layout and fabricate duct systems ranging from 150 CFM to 20–615 CFM capacity.
- Perform preventive maintenance on diffusers, induction cabinets, mixing boxes, and motorized fire dampers.
- Maintain and repair 20‑000 lbs per hour water tube boilers with multi‑stage duplex steam and electric boiler feed water pumps, accumulator tanks, electronic and pneumatic controls, condensate transfer pumps, and related recorders.
- Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 7:30 am–4:00 pm (subject to change based on agency needs).
- Physical requirements: Strenuous physical effort required while dismantling and reassembling equipment; frequently carrying and setting up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds; work from ladders, scaffolding, and hard‑to‑reach places; stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling for long periods; hand dexterity is critical.
