Master HVAC Mechanic (Air Conditioning & Heating Mechanic) – Department of General Services

Location: Howard County, Maryland. Salary: $70,000 - $100,000.

Position Summary

This senior technical level position includes lead worker responsibilities and focuses on skilled trade work at the master mechanic level involving heating, ventilation, and air conditioning installation, maintenance and repairs for County-owned facilities. The role is performed with general supervision and is reviewed periodically on a project basis.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and participate in the installation, service, and maintenance of air conditioning and heating equipment.
  • Perform preventive and emergency maintenance, troubleshooting air conditioning, heating, electrical, and pneumatic controls.
  • Disassemble, replace, or adjust defective parts; test completed work; recharge air conditioning systems with refrigerants and track usage to meet EPA regulations.
  • Order parts, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure efficient, economical, and safe operation of equipment.
  • Test joints, systems, compressors, and other related equipment; clean and maintain boilers and chillers.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of all equipment and maintenance activities.
  • Assist in building maintenance tasks and coordinate with electricians and plumbers as necessary.
  • Direct the work of others and may serve as an apprentice for a specified time.
  • Perform overtime and on-call work, serving as an emergency/essential position during various emergency situations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED plus five (5) years of related experience, or equivalent education/experience combination.
  • EPA Refrigerant Certification.
  • Valid Master HVAC R License issued by the State of Maryland (maintained during employment).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of standard trade practices, shop mathematics, electrical wiring diagrams, and blueprint reading.
  • Ability to climb, work from scaffolds, ladders, and catwalks; ability to diagnose electrical, mechanical, and electronic defects.
  • Basic computer skills for menu navigation.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and supervisory skills.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to write routine reports and give effective presentations.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to building and grounds maintenance work.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

The position requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, handling, reaching, and lifting up to 100 pounds. The work environment includes exposure to inclement weather, moving mechanical parts, vibration, hazardous chemicals, and occasional high, precarious places. Noise levels are usually loud.
