Helbling USA is hiring: Robotics Hardware Engineer in Cambridge
Helbling USA, Cambridge, MA, United States, 02140
About This Role
Helbling USA is an engineering consulting firm with expertise in medical devices, laboratory instruments, robotics, and mechatronics - and most importantly, innovation. We are in Cambridge, MA and are looking for a Robotics Hardware Engineer to join our talented team. As such, you will execute projects that turn ideas into technically substantiated products (and everything in between). The ideal candidates are well‑rounded team players who thrive in an entrepreneurial and dynamic environment - we regularly shift gears between ideation, theoretical analysis, detailed design (e.g., CAD), prototyping/building, testing, debugging, and, crucially, communicating that work with our clients. Ideal candidates would have experience developing robotic hardware (joints, linkages, implementing sensing elements) and bringing up the said hardware within a system (electromechanical integration, writing control software, simulation of kinematics/dynamics in a digital environment such as ROS/Matlab/Drake).
Role Responsibilities
- Actively contribute to developing innovative medical and lab systems, robotics and/or automation solutions, with a focus on mechanical, electronics, software, and/or systems design
- Own development and refinement of systems, modules, interfaces, mechanisms, components in CAD etc. (e.g. detailed design of plastic/metal parts, selection of motors, sensors, bearing systems, brakes, etc.)
- Apply fundamental engineering calculations, as well as tolerance analysis and finite element techniques to specify components (bearing capacity/types, motors/joints, gearboxes, mechanism elements, etc.) to support concept evaluations, conclusions, and recommendations
- Simulate kinematics and dynamics of multi‑DOF systems to inform design (in ROS/Matlab/Drake, etc)
- Source, build, bring up, and debug prototypes, generating key documentation as needed (2D drawings, test protocols, test reports)
- Manage preparation and presentation of project reports, reviews, and weekly client updates
Required Qualifications
- Minimum a BS in Mechanical, Electrical, Robotics, or Mechatronics Engineering and minimum of 3+ years of related engineering full‑time professional experience or equivalent (advanced technical degrees preferred)
- Eligible to work in the US without sponsorship (unfortunately we cannot sponsor H1B visa)
Additional Qualifications
- Demonstrable experience in product development, robotics, and/or machine design, a strong plus
- Solid understanding of fundamental mechanical engineering mechanisms and electromechanical principles
- Expertise in software development with a focus toward controlling hardware a strong plus (Matlab, Python, C++, microcontrollers)
- Proven experience creating robust CAD parts / complex assemblies (SolidWorks preferred)
- Excellent communication skills (e.g. ability to explain technical issues to a non‑technical audience)
- Entrepreneurial “can do” attitude
- Excited to work for a company that values diversity
Helbling Offers
- Diverse and exciting projects in MedTech, Robotics and Automation with motivated and collaborative teammates
- Opportunity to support our growing US branches and connection to Helbling offices in Europe
- Respect for work‑life balance
- Competitive salary
- PTO, parental leave, sick time, and public holidays
- Insurance coverage (medical, dental, vision, life), 401K with matching
