This is a stipended position and is only open to current, eligible, licensed BPS employees whose current job status allows them to participate in this opportunity.

Start Date / Location / Duration:

Classes will begin during the second week of January at Samuel Adams Elementary School (165 Webster Street, East Boston, MA 02128). Each course includes 10 preparation hours. Instruction will take place two days per week, with each class lasting two hours, over a 10-week period—for a total of 40 instructional hours during the 2025–2026 school year. The combined preparation and instructional time totals 50 hours.

Position overview:

The ESOL program of the Office of Multilingual and Multicultural Education is designed to develop parents' English language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing while providing parents and caregivers with information and resources about their vital responsibility in shaping the lives of their children by providing learning opportunities across academic, parenting, social emotional, and content areas.

In this position, the ESOL classes are among many classes in which we support our BPS parents and families. Instructors educate BPS parents and families by offering English language reading, speaking, and listening skills. Instruction is targeted to limited English-speaking BPS parents and families. The instructor will also guide parents and families to meaningfully participate in their child’s education at the school level.

These courses are fully in person at community locations, the same location will be used for each course section.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teach ESOL skills to participants (up to 20 BPS parents and families) at varying levels while integrating core skills needed for English language learning.

Customize instructional materials by building on own training and experience to create high-quality lesson plans for instructing BPS parents and families in English as a Second Language, using an integrated and relevant, student-driven curriculum.

Use ESOL texts, teacher-made materials, and the English for New Bostonian curriculum.

Assess student readiness to take the BEST exam and other English fluency tests and coordinate with the coordinator.

Employees will be compensated at the BTU hourly rate
