The course guides undergraduates in achieving a critical understanding of historical inequities on educational opportunities for students under‑represented in four‑year institutions. The course readings, lectures, guest speakers, in‑class dialogue, and out‑of‑class community‑engaged learning focus on formal schooling experiences and outcomes of the student populations served by the Partnership Schools. The Preuss School UCSD and Gompers Preparatory Academy both enroll students of color (majority African American, Black, Chicanx, and Latinx) who are of low socioeconomic status and will be first in their families to attend a four‑year university.
