Manufacturing Engineer - Federal Ammunition

As a Manufacturing Engineer, you will develop new methods, tooling and machine designs and resolve processing issues/problems in the manufacturing of shells, primers, and/or cartridges in the ammunition plants.
This position reports to the Manufacturing Engineer Manager and is based out of our Anoka office.
What You’ll Do
Develop improvements to tooling and processes for the manufacture of existing products by changing specifications and supervising special tests concerning product improvement.
Investigate and troubleshoot production difficulties and take corrective measures.
Identify and implement cost‑reduction opportunities such as improved material utilization, increased machine/process efficiency, and reduced cost of poor quality.
Review tools and perishable machine parts drawings for the necessity of revision on tolerances, surface finishes, dimensions, material selection, etc., and initiate Engineering Change Orders where justified.
Assist with design, building and installation of machine and equipment guarding in accordance with OSHA standards; present guarding to the safety committee for approval.
Assist in implementing new products working in conjunction with the new products group and manufacturing engineering.
Perform major equipment failure project management assignments, including responsibility for capital expenditure justification, equipment/process redesign and documentation, project spending, project execution timing, and resource management.
Review bills of materials and routes for accuracy and cost‑saving opportunities; process changes to correct errors.
Experience You Bring
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent related experience.
CAD training; SolidWorks preferred.
Computer skills in word processing and spreadsheets.
Excellent mathematical, problem‑solving, written and verbal communication skills.
Thorough understanding and broad application of technical standards, principles, theories, and techniques.
Ability to perform at a high level with minimal supervision and direction.
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with other manufacturing plant personnel.
You Might Have
3+ years’ experience in a manufacturing environment.
Hands‑on experience with Six Sigma tools and techniques and lean manufacturing concepts.
Thorough understanding of machine shop technology.
Well‑rounded knowledge base on materials, technologies, manufacturing techniques.
Knowledge of Excel Pivot Tables and Macros.
Physical Requirements Most time is spent sitting with occasional standing and walking in the immediate work area or in manufacturing. Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling weights of up to 10 pounds. Periodic climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling when observing production processes. Reaching, handling, and fingering (manual dexterity) for work on computer, function board, measuring dies, products or tooling. Vision for observing production processes, inspecting primer mix, etc. Hearing for diagnosing problems in machinery due to the sounds made.
Mental Requirements Reading for technical materials and blueprints and math skills for calculations and conversions. Attention to detail for design work. Reasoning and problem solving and attentiveness to tasks and deadlines. Flexibility to handle many projects simultaneously and attentiveness to time deadlines. Individual initiative to complete projects in a timely fashion. Verbal and written communication skills to communicate with vendors and internal associates. Work direction given to associates working on the assigned projects.
Equipment Used Telephone, copy/print/fax machine, computer and keyboard, manufacturing machines, tooling, calculator and drafting tools.
Working Environment Work is done during normal work hours, but overtime may be necessary depending on the workload. Frequent time spent in production areas subject to exposure to noise, mechanical, pressurized, electrical, and explosive equipment/material, and moving objects. Depending on the area, may be exposed to fumes/odors or dirt/dust. Most work is done individually, though some time is spent working with others and all work is done around other associates. Occasional contact with outside vendors. General supervision received.
Employee Work Assignments May include tasks working with and/or exposure to potentially hazardous areas, including flammables and explosives. Safety training is provided to all employees to ensure compliance with company and federal regulations.
Pay Range $75,800.00 – $106,000.00 Actual annual salary offered will be based on variables including experience, geographic location, education, and skills/achievements, and will be mutually agreed upon at the time of offer.
