Position Overview
As a Principal Design Engineer on the Cowling Engineering team at Mercury Marine you will lead the design, development, and validation of cowling and latching systems and related components on marine outboard engines.
Essential Functions
Design and analyze Class A cowl components, seals, panel-to-panel fit, and related components and systems.
Develop designs for Class A components and customer interaction points utilizing a variety of manufacturing processes.
Lead concept and process exploration through competitive assessments, concept trade‑off studies, cross‑functional reviews, and more.
Work cross‑functionally with Industrial Design to develop Class A parts and customer interaction points for outboard engines.
Identify, generate, and compare solutions while showcasing compromises (fit and finish, cost, mass, schedule, resources, manufacturability, etc).
Develop and execute FMEAs, DVPs, DFSS tools, facilitate failure analysis and corrective actions.
Ability to identify and present risk and technical issues in design for review.
Develop and contribute to test procedures and design standards to guide future project work.
Create and execute component test plans, write and execute test requests.
Collaborate with and provide direction to CAD designers and test technicians.
CAD (Creo) 3D model and drawing creation: specify proper technical information and GD&T.
Develop technical specifications and scopes of work for purchased components.
Analyze and present test data and results to inform decision making and design direction.
Provide support for Current Product Engineering and Manufacturing to resolve and implement solutions to technical problems.
Lead cross‑functional teams including procurement, quality, and external suppliers.
Maintain high level of engineering excellence (creativity, drawings, craftsmanship, usability, functionality, etc).
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
8+ years of experience in product development.
Understanding of a variety of manufacturing processes (sheet metal forming, aluminum casting, injection‑molded plastic, molded or extruded rubber).
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with:
Injection‑molded plastic processes.
Large Class A panel design.
Seal design and development.
NVH design and development.
FMEA process.
Six‑sigma tools and application.
Understanding and application of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
Ability to utilize Creo for model and print creation, 3D model evaluation, or component analysis.
Experience within Teamcenter engineering or similar PLM software/Change Release Process.
Benefits All job offers are made through the candidate portal. The anticipated pay range for this position is $100,900 – $160,800 annually. In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
