Purpose To operate, monitor, and maintain water treatment plant systems and related equipment to provide quality drinking water for public use. This position may also perform technical/skilled work involving inspection, maintenance and/or repair of utility equipment and machinery, or technical/skilled work in the certified drinking water laboratory.

Salary Information

Water Plant Operator Trainee: $42,300.58

Water Plant Operator C: $47,527.64

Water Plant Operator B: $50,380.33

Water Plant Operator A: $55,544.31

Essential Functions

Operate reverse osmosis, nano-filtration, ion exchange and ancillary treatment systems.

Control plant operations in accordance with regulations and procedures.

Complete operator duties checklists, including routine water analysis, chemical dosage adjustments, SCADA system changes, and production volume adjustments.

Monitor and inspect systems for leaks or issues, document malfunctions, run emergency generators, and conduct site visits at water supply wells and storage facilities.

Maintain logs and records of plant operations, meter readings, test results, and chemical applications.

Check the SCADA system, troubleshoot problems, and respond to alarms.

Monitor inventory levels of chemicals and supplies; manage deliveries and shipments.

Perform general cleaning and maintenance tasks for equipment and facilities.

Follow safety procedures, utilize safety equipment, and participate in mandatory safety trainings.

Communicate plant status to the Chief Operator and management.

Stay current on laws, regulations, and professional literature; attend workshops and training sessions.

Operate and maintain computer systems, input and verify data, and perform basic office equipment maintenance.

Provide after‑hours customer service and assistance for water line or service issues.

Ability to work shifts 24/7, including weekends, holidays, and emergency events.

Handle hazardous chemicals, including sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, chlorine gas, and others.

Provide training for new operators and trainees (Operator C level).

Minimum Qualifications All Levels and Trainee:

High school diploma or GED.

College level coursework or vocational training in water treatment operations (or equivalent experience).

Preferred: Southeast Desalting Association Membrane Operations Certification (SEDA MOC).

Valid Florida driver’s license (or equivalent to Class E, obtainable within 30 days).

Water Plant Operator C:

1 year of experience or training in equipment troubleshooting, mechanical maintenance, water treatment operations, and sample analysis.

Valid State of Florida Class C Certified Drinking Water Treatment Plant Operator License.

Water Plant Operator B:

3 years of experience or training in the same areas as Operator C.

Valid State of Florida Class B Certified Drinking Water Treatment Plant Operator License.

Must obtain SEDA MOC within 2 years.

Water Plant Operator A:

5 years of experience or training in the same areas as Operator B.

Valid State of Florida Class A Certified Drinking Water Treatment Plant Operator License.

Must obtain SEDA MOC within 2 years.

ADA Compliance – Physical Ability

Regularly perform tasks involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting 20–50 pounds.

Discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues; communicate orally.

Work in adverse environmental conditions such as dust, fumes, temperature extremes, vibrations, and hazardous substances.
