Craven County
Performs specialized law enforcement work in the processing and serving of civil documents for the Sheriff’s Office, including child support (IV-D) papers and civil/criminal court processes. Responsibilities include serving legal papers such as summons, commitments, show cause orders, and arrest warrants. The role requires tact and firmness in public interactions, exercising independent judgment and initiative within established policies. Work is supervised by the Captain or Lieutenant of Civil Process and evaluated based on effectiveness in serving papers.
Additional duties include serving various legal documents, locating parties using directories, explaining papers, making arrests when necessary, and appearing in court as a witness. The position may also involve serving in other Sheriff’s Office capacities, including patrol, investigations, narcotics, and administrative roles, as needed.
Qualifications include graduation from high school or equivalent, at least one year of relevant experience, Basic Law Enforcement Certification, certification through the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Training and Standards Commission, and a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Physical requirements involve operating machinery and vehicles, exerting force as needed, and the ability to walk or stand for significant periods. The physical demands exceed sedentary work, aligning more with Light Work classification.
