Position Overview The Department of Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) seeks a tenure‑track faculty member in Materials Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in materials engineering, conduct research in materials engineering and manufacturing, and engage in service to the department, college, and university. The role requires weekly office hours, faculty meetings, participation in assessment of student learning, and service. Teaching may be required on weekdays, evenings, weekends, or online. The candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, mentorship, scholarship, and service.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field with an official diploma at the time of employment from an accredited institution.

College or university‑level teaching experience in‑person and/or online in areas such as materials characterization, mechanical behavior of materials, non‑destructive evaluation, fundamentals of MEMS fabrication, composite materials, corrosion, thin film technology, failure analysis and phase transformations, nanomaterials and nanotechnology.

Evidence of continuing research in materials engineering, e.g., conference presentations, peer‑reviewed publications, and external funding proposals.

Experience operating materials characterization equipment and/or maintaining laboratory equipment such as FESEM/SEM, EDAX/EBSD, EDS, XRD, AFM, and microscopy.

Experience advising, supervising, mentoring, and/or working effectively with undergraduate and graduate students.

Preferred Qualifications

Interest and knowledge of the MSEM department and CSUN, with a clear vision of contributing industrial or practical experience to the Materials Engineering Master’s program.

Experience researching or teaching in manufacturing and related fields.

Taught a course independently at the college/university level in any of the areas listed above.

Experience recruiting students and growing enrollment and programs.

Experience allocating and managing resources, supervising research assistants/lab technicians, and/or staff.

Industrial or practical experience with materials engineering or similar areas.

Experience with assessment processes and accreditation systems such as ABET.

Strong communication skills, evidenced by a well‑written cover letter, teaching, and research statements.

Evidence of effective engagement or potential to engage with a diverse student body.

Experience using culturally responsive pedagogy that leads to equitable outcomes for all students.

Experience creating a student‑centered learning environment.

Research/lab experience that includes working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Experience adopting inclusive approaches to mentoring.

Teaching evaluations for courses taught independently. For co‑teaching or lab instruction, provide a confirmation letter describing teaching effectiveness. Submit evaluations for courses within the past three years and for up to six courses.

Names and contact information (email and phone) of at least three references who can address the candidate's teaching, research, and service.

At the time of appointment, a successful candidate who is not a U.S. citizen must have authorization from USCIS to work in the United States.
