RN First Assistant
Position Summary The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a perioperative registered nurse who functions in an expanded role or as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) acting as a first assistant. The RNFA is responsible, through nursing processes, for providing and coordinating nursing care and resource management for patients and families in the operating room. RNFAs support the patient care team by performing various multifunctional patient care duties. Under the direct supervision and direction of the operating surgeon, the RNFA functions during the assisting phase of the procedure until the conclusion of the operative procedure. The RNFA does not function concurrently as a Scrub Nurse or Circulating Nurse.
Essential Job Functions / Accountabilities
Provide hemostasis by independently applying electrocautery and instrumentation directly to tissue or by suturing, application of tie ligatures and clips.
Provide site exposure of relevant areas through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques.
Assist by handling tissue in dissection and suturing utilizing appropriate instrumentation during operative procedure.
Perform wound closure of peritoneum, fascia, subcutaneous tissue and skin.
Communicate pertinent information to the surgical team throughout all phases of the nursing process, interpreting clinical data/patient responses and collaborating with members of the health care team to provide comprehensive and coordinated patient care.
Perform all other duties not specifically assigned.
Position Requirements
Education: Graduate of a nursing school; completion of an accredited course in RN First Assisting required.
Experience: Three (3) to Five (5) years of demonstrated experience in the field or profession preferred.
Technical Skills: N/A
Certifications / Licenses / Registrations: Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Ohio. Current CNOR certification required. BLS required. ACLS preferred.
Schedule 4‑10 hour shifts; 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM; call requirements.
Status Full‑time.
