Plains All American is a leading transportation and midstream provider specializing in pipeline transportation, storage, processing, and marketing solutions for crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGLs). The Junior Electrical & Instrumentation Technician provides electrical and instrumentation support to Plains assets through the installation, calibration, maintenance, and repair of designated equipment and systems. This field-based role requires safety accommodations, protective clothing, and equipment, and is subject to callouts for field operations and emergency response.
Responsibilities
Execute tasks with moderate guidance; work with little supervision on routine maintenance and projects.
Schedule and perform inspections and maintenance of electrical equipment at substations, pump stations, valve & manifold sites, and other facilities.
Maintain equipment according to the maintenance control system by creating service requests, sourcing parts, and completing work orders.
Conduct preventive maintenance on DC and AC motors, batteries, rectifiers, and inverters, referencing vendor manuals and resolving abnormal conditions.
Perform lockouts and isolations on company facilities, test and ensure correct operation of transmitter, safety, and protective devices, switchgear, substation equipment, motors, valve operators/actuators, tank gauging equipment, and electrical control devices.
Maintain low voltage distribution panels, perform SCADA system repairs, and install SCADA equipment, DCS, HMI, and PLCs.
Install conduit, associated wiring, electronic metering devices, and inspect and repair AC/DC equipment including emergency battery backup power devices.
Assist senior personnel with line location and operational functions, participate in construction projects, turnaround planning, installing and commissioning, and maintain stations, terminals, mainline, gathering systems, and associated equipment.
Complete all necessary paperwork for regulatory compliance on electrical and instrumentation equipment, safe work permits, near miss and incident reports, and communicate problem areas and recommendations.
Respond to breakdown and emergency equipment failures, manage minor purchases, basic cost tracking, and reporting, and ensure adequate material and inventory stock levels are maintained.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree, apprenticeship, or 2 years of field experience preferred.
Ability to read and comprehend electrical drawings, pipeline maps, technical manuals, perform load studies and calculations.
Knowledge of electrical code requirements, federal, state, and provincial regulations, and protective device training.
Experience with high voltage electrical systems, substation and switchgear work, and protective relays and devices.
Proficiency installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing industrial electrical systems, AC/DC voltage measurement, capacitance and amperage testing.
Experience with PLCs, flow computers, UPS inverters, and backup battery system maintenance.
Basic computer skills (Excel, Microsoft Office).
Understanding of pipeline and facility operations, line locating, and basic crossings.
Outstanding safety record and compliance with PHMSA, OSHA regulations.
Legally authorized to work in the United States.
Qualifications
Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract.
Cleared criminal history and satisfactory reference checks.
