MedStar Health is looking for a Medical Assistant to join our team. We seek a certified medical assistant with excellent customer service and patient interaction skills. The role involves clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting, supervised by a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Duties include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, measuring and documenting vital signs, assisting providers with patient exams, and providing telephone and clerical support. The position may float to other sites or locations within the system.
Primary Duties
Assist providers with patient preparation, office procedures, examination, and education of patients. Support the clinical care team to ensure optimal patient flow and manage patient volume. Review and prepare for scheduled patient visits. Screen patients for preventative care needs, ongoing support, barriers to care, safety concerns, and potential fall risk. Conduct surveillance for transitions of care, urgent or emergent care, or follow up tasks. Conduct motivational interviews and coaching on disease management and community outreach. Identify behavioral health needs and notify providers.
Report actual or potential problems concerning patients, families, and associates. Participate in performance improvement initiatives and attend training for safety, infection control, and related tasks. Ensure compliance by maintaining temperature logs, medication supply inventories, and emergency equipment. Participate in population management activities and support patient self‑management, care goal setting, and planning.
Perform selected patient and laboratory testing, including point‑of‑care testing, tuberculosis skin testing, electrocardiography, pulmonary function tests, vision and hearing testing. Remove sutures or staples. Document activities in the electronic medical record. Perform required patient follow‑up for pap smears, lead levels, HIV, mammograms, and STDs. Collect and process specimens and complete requisitions.
Provide escort and assist with patient discharge and chaperoning. Fulfill infection prevention and environmental responsibilities. Update records of scheduled equipment maintenance and manage drug and medical supply inventories. Provide telephone screening services and document per established protocols.
Insert intravenous catheter for physician‑initiated IV fluid therapy or medications. Insert, remove, and monitor urinary catheter for procedures. Prepare and administer oral drugs and injections limited to intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular. Perform phlebotomy. Propose medication refills in EMR for provider approval and complete requisitions. Contact insurance for pre‑authorizations and referrals.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by the American Association of Medical Assistants within one year or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists within one year.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Experience working in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent.
Externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting strongly preferred.
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
Completed externship program at MedStar Health may substitute for experience.
Salary Range USD $19.55 – $34.25 per hour.
