SUMMARY: The Audiologist reports directly to the Clinical Manager and/ or Assistant Clinical Manager (ACM), and may be under the guidance of more senior program specific clinician. The Audiologist provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluation services for auditory, vestibular, and related disorders; evaluates, selects, fits and dispenses hearing instruments and cochlear implants; provides aural rehabilitation to assist patients to regain or utilize their hearing abilities at the highest level possible. RESPONSIBILITIES: Communication and professional interaction with patients, caregivers, rehabilitation staff, providers, and other health care professionals. Examination and evaluation of patients to determine degree and type of hearing loss. Establish diagnosis and prognosis for hearing improvement through the use of artificial aids based on patient symptoms. Perform specialized testing such as site of lesion, auditory brainstem response, otoacoustic emissions, vestibular evoked potentials, acoustic reflex testing, videonystagmography. Evaluate and manage children and adults with central auditory processing disorders. Measure and interpret auditory evoked potentials for neurophysiologic inter-operative monitoring and cranial nerve assessment. Perform cochlea implant evaluations and mapping. Conduct otoscopic examination, create ear impressions, fit hearing protection or prosthetic devices. Assess and non‑medical management of tinnitus, provide screening of speech‑language for audiologic evaluation, and provide education and counseling regarding rehabilitation, test results, aids, and expectations. Fit, program, dispense and monitor hearing aids. Provide audiological rehabilitation, including speech reading, communication management, language development, and psychosocial adjustment counseling. Provide specialized aural rehabilitation training for patients whose hearing cannot be helped by amplification. Complete documentation and billing accurately and timely, ensuring compliance with departmental policy and regulatory standards. Seek additional guidance when necessary to assure safe and effective patient care. Recommend and refer for additional diagnostic testing and/or services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Basic knowledge requirements include a Master’s degree in Audiology from an accredited institution if licensed by December 31, 2007, or a Doctoral degree if initial licensure is January 1, 2008 or later. State license issued by the Rhode Island Department of Health and a Certificate of Clinical Competence from ASHA or AAA are necessary. Minimum of one year experience including a one-year clinical externship.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Fit for duty in accordance with OSHA standards and program‑specific needs.

INDEPENDENT ACTION: Performs independently within the department’s policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to ACM or Clinical Manager. Independently sets goals for professional development. Membership and involvement in discipline‑specific professional organization strongly encouraged.

SUPERVISED RESPONSIBILITY: No direct supervision, but responsible for clinical supervision of supportive personnel, Clinical Fellows, and students, including cosigning notes and reviewing patient treatment plans and goals.

Pay Range

$73,216.42 - $120,781.75
