POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM THE CLASSIFIED SERVICE
The West Virginia State Tax Division is seeking an advanced candidate who will primarily examine and audit complex tax returns and other related documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with WV law. The incumbent will exercise independent judgment, correspond with taxpayers and their representatives in writing or on the phone, and communicate with auditors, attorneys, and other agency employees regarding tax matters.
Responsibilities
Verify accurate return filings.
Engage in tax discovery and desk auditing programs.
Assess tax or deny refund claims using the integrated tax system.
Maintain strict confidentiality of taxpayer information.
Qualifications
In-depth knowledge of state tax laws, regulations, and filing requirements.
Self‑motivated with strong written and oral communication skills.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.
Preferably familiarity with Google applications (Docs, Sheets, Gmail).
History of tax auditing or tax accounting experience sufficient to handle advanced desk auditing is preferred.
Training
Associate degree from an accredited college or university; verification before certification.
Substitution
Experience: Four (4) years at the State Tax Division, or four years providing accounting or clerical support.
Or: Successful completion of a course of study that included three (3) semester hours of math and/or accounting, substituting for experience at a rate of thirty (30) semester hours for every year.
Experience can also be substituted for training at one year of experience per thirty semester hours of training.
