On-Call Position Available

Qualified candidates will be invited to in‑person interviews on November 17th and 18th. Successful candidates will attend the earliest Training Academy available. The on‑call/intermittent positions have no minimum hour guarantee.

Female gender is a BFOQ for certain positions at facilities housing female offenders. The on‑call/intermittent positions have no minimum hour guarantee.

About Prison Facilities

The Washington Legislature has established a comprehensive system of corrections for convicted law violators to accomplish the primary objective of ensuring public safety. The system is designed and managed to provide the maximum feasible safety for the persons and property of the general public, staff, and inmates (RCW 72.09.010). The Department of Corrections (DOC) has 11 prison facilities with custody levels ranging from minimum to maximum security.

Salary Information

Corrections & Custody Officer 1 (TEAMSTERS Range 45 Step J-M)

Full-time – $5,710 – $6,150

On-call/Hourly – $32.82 – $35.34

Corrections & Custody Officer 2 (TEAMSTERS Range 48 Step J-M)

Full-time – $6,150 – $6,623

On-call/Hourly – $35.34 – $38.06

Qualifications for CO2 Level

One year of experience as a DOC Corrections and Custody Officer, including successful completion of the CORE (Academy) and the Correctional Officer Field Training Program.

One year of experience as a Correctional Officer in adult or juvenile corrections, with security functions equivalent to a DOC Corrections and Security Officer 2.

On-Call Positions

On-call staff may work an average of 32‑40 hours per week; no minimum hour guarantee. Incumbents will attend 6 weeks of full‑time paid training immediately upon hire and will be considered for permanent or temporary vacancies as they occur. All correctional officers, including those in on-call positions, receive a benefits package (medical, dental, vision, and retirement).

The Washington State Department of Corrections seeks highly motivated individuals for the positions of Correctional Officer 1 and/or 2 at the Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW), Gig Harbor, WA. SCCC is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Custody levels: Maximum, Medium, Long‑Term, Minimum. WCCW is Washington’s only multi‑custody correctional facility for adult women, providing programs that reduce the likelihood of re‑commitment and promote self‑efficacy.

Duties

This job class is designated as in‑training. The employee will advance to CO2 after satisfactory completion of the CO1 training requirements. In an adult correctional facility, Correctional Officers provide safety and security, and assist in controlling, directing, and monitoring the activities and movement of incarcerated individuals. They maintain security of the institution and control movement into, out of, and within the institution in accordance with department methods and procedures. Officers are expected to be positive role models, help inmates become productive members of society, correct and counteract criminal thinking, and prepare them for successful re‑entry.

Overtime is an essential function of this position.

Correctional Officers must successfully complete Correctional Worker Core (CWC), a six‑week academy for all DOC employees. On‑the‑job training continues throughout employment.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.

Valid driver’s license.

Legal right to carry a firearm.

Note: Pre‑employment process includes drug testing and psychological evaluation.

Employees may work directly with or in close proximity to incarcerated individuals in a potentially hazardous setting. The department is committed to maintaining a drug‑ and alcohol‑free work environment; a pre‑employment drug test is required. Applicants with sensitivities to pepper spray, animal care programs, or respiratory protection requirements should inquire as needed. This position is included in a union shop.
