Job Summary Organizationally positioned in the division of Student Affairs, the Center for Intercollegiate Athletics is committed to providing an outstanding student‑centered athletic experience through the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. The assistant coach will join an exceptional staff who strive to create an unrivaled experience that fosters the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth of our student‑athletes in order to prepare them for success as leaders in the global community.
Reporting to the head coach for a specific sport in RIT Athletics, the assistant coach is responsible for assisting the head coach with the planning, development and supervision of the program. Responsibilities include recruiting academically qualified and talented student‑athletes, planning and supervision of practice sessions, preparation of meet plans and coaching assignments, player development programs, advisement/mentorship of student‑athletes, and maintaining a working knowledge of NCAA and league rules and regulations.
Job Responsibilities
Assist the head coach in effectively recruiting qualified and talented student‑athletes from a global perspective; lead contact and follow‑up with all potential student‑athletes.
Develop and implement strategic practice plans; provide a productive teaching environment for practice sessions.
Coordinate strength & conditioning with the department head, oversee roster management and equipment coordination for all teams.
Assist with meet preparations and coaching; provide analysis and feedback to the head coach before, during and after competition; communicate with other coaches regarding performance observations and suggestions.
Support player development and coordinate team development opportunities; assist the head coach with required team programming from NCAA and RIT compliance offices.
Mentor student‑athletes, serve as a positive role model, maintain effective communication, and attend professional development opportunities when available.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree.
1–2 years of coaching experience (preferable at the college level).
Effective communication, problem‑solving, and the ability to perform under pressure.
Capacity to foster relations with internal staff and student‑athletes.
Ability to manage and maintain confidential information with appropriate safeguards.
Effective interpersonal, written, and electronic communication skills, including conveying complex information to diverse groups.
Computer proficiency using software and enterprise systems appropriate for the role.
Preferred Qualifications
Playing experience at the college level.
Knowledge of Deaf culture, American Sign Language (ASL), or willingness to learn.
