Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine clerical, administrative, and technical work in receiving and dispatching routine and emergency information. Receives and responds to communications by radio to police, fire, public works, and administration. Processes prisoners incarcerated at the facility. Reports to a Police Sergeant.

Monitors telephones and radio in the dispatch center, answers all incoming calls, and ascertains the nature of calls. Gathers necessary information to transmit or relay. Dispatches police and response vehicles for emergencies, broadcasting incident details. Contacts relevant personnel and agencies, such as fire department, during emergencies. Maintains computer-aided dispatch logs, tracking personnel and equipment locations. Maintains ongoing contact with responders during emergencies, keeping them informed of updates like traffic lights out or street closures. Keeps dispatch center work area and equipment clean and operational.
Receives complaints from the public regarding crimes and emergencies, broadcasts orders to police units, and relays instructions or questions. Logs messages for officers and department personnel. Uses NCIC computer for inquiries into criminal history, vehicle registration, license checks, etc. Monitors detained individuals in jail facilities and maintains related records. Performs searches of prisoners, monitors conduct and safety, and maintains security in the holding area. Keeps emergency contact lists and logs towed vehicles and notices. Operates radios and assists with communication as needed.
Performs routine public safety work related to prisoner care, maintaining order and discipline. Keeps dispatch records and documents.
Additional Job Functions:
Delivers meals to prisoners.
Fills in other departmental positions as needed.
Assists in training new employees.
Transmits messages between agency divisions and other law enforcement agencies.
Serves on employee committees.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, with two years of related customer service or dispatching experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must obtain NCIC certification within six months and E-911 and SC Basic Jail certification within one year. Must complete periodic training and pass background checks as per South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy standards. Applications are accepted online at
