Senior Equipment Operator - Drainage Operation
The City of Colorado Springs is ready to welcome multiple Senior Equipment Operator's to the Drainage Operation team for Public Works Operations Maintenance Division. As a Senior Equipment Operator for this team, you will perform a variety of skilled construction and maintenance tasks to construct and maintain the City's roadway and drainage infrastructure.
We are hiring for multiple positions on this team. *This position is subject to budget-required furloughs to be implemented in the 2026 calendar year, and any furloughs subsequently approved.*

About This Team & Key Duties Operate and maintain heavy machinery for installation, maintenance, and repair of drainage systems. Tasks include excavation, land clearing, and infrastructure maintenance to manage water flow, prevent flooding, and ensure public safety.

Anticipated Schedule 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM. Either Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday depending on crew assignment after hire.

Hiring Range $28.20 - $33.86

As a Senior Equipment Operator, you will:
Operate equipment such as the long reach excavator, motor grader, dozer, front end loader, backhoe, semi-tractor trailer, tanker, and various types of compactors; safely and properly operate various hand and power tools
Construct and maintain drainage structures using materials such as asphalt, concrete, rip rap, and/or geotextiles
Operate a single or tandem axle dump truck with plow and sander; apply chemicals, abrasives, and other ice control products during snow removal operations
Perform manual labor such as cleaning culverts, mowing, patching potholes, and shoveling muck
Read and interpret maps, sketches, drawings, specifications, and technical manuals
Maintain log and record books
Enter data using Cartegraph
Schedule, coordinate, train, and direct the work of assigned maintenance staff; serve in a lead worker capacity

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate: Knowledge of:
Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in heavy equipment operations
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices related to this type of work
Basic principles of civil engineering
Ability to:
Read, write, and apply for permits specifically related to stormwater
Interpret, apply, and explain pertinent laws, rules, and regulations as well as City policies and procedures
Work independently in the absence of supervision
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED)
Five years of full-time, professional experience in related field
Possess, or obtain upon hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restrictions
Possess and maintain upon hire a valid, non-probationary Class B Colorado CDL (Commercial Driver's License) not subject to restrictions related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
Possess, or obtain within one year of hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Class A Colorado CDL (Commercial Driver's License) not subject to restrictions related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
