Position Sr RF Engineer (SDR)
Location Portland, OR (on‑site)
Position Description We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated RF Engineer with Software Defined Radio (SDR) expertise to join our team. You will be responsible for utilizing SDR technology to design Counter Unmanned Aircraft Systems products for two primary functions: products that receive UAS command and control signals for identification, and products that emit jamming signals to counter the UAS. This role requires a strong background in engineering, RF communication protocols, and SDR technologies.
You will work with our cross‑discipline team to help develop new, advanced counter UAS products.
Required Skills/Qualifications
Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to write clear, well‑documented test plans and procedures for RF devices and systems.
Adaptable, eager to learn, and proactive toward continuous improvement.
Ability to work in a small team to rapidly prototype and develop new products.
7+ years relevant experience working with RF Devices and Software Defined Radio.
Responsible for RF aspects of the initial design and sustainment of products to support the new product introduction (NPI) process and specifically lead on SDR selection, configuration and testing for RF emitter and RF receive products.
Develop designs that meet product requirements and implement those designs using modern electrical schematic capture tools; should have experience in Altium.
Collaborate in the requirements analysis and the RF design for projects by working closely with mechanical and software groups; provide high‑quality estimates of project scope.
Incorporate continuous improvement of engineering development and manufacturing processes.
Develop test strategies and plans for both design validation and production test in accordance with industry standards and customer requirements.
Demonstrated experience working with SDRs and RF communication systems and incorporating SDRs in product designs.
Hands‑on experience in collecting and analyzing RF signals using SDR hardware and software tools.
Familiarity with various modulation and demodulation techniques, including but not limited to FSK, PSK, QAM, and OFDM.
Experience with protocol analysis and reverse engineering techniques to decipher communication protocols from raw RF data.
Knowledge of field‑programmable gate array (FPGA) development and VHDL coding as it relates to SDR architecture.
Proficiency in using professional SDR platforms such as the Ettus USRP family, Analog Devices AD936x family, or similar tools for waveform generation.
Ability to implement signal processing algorithms, demodulation techniques, and protocol decoding strategies using SDR frameworks such as Software Communications Architecture (SCA), GNU Radio, REDHAWK, and/or X‑Midas.
Skilled in programming languages commonly used in SDR programming, such as Python, C/C++, or MATLAB.
Experience in a laboratory environment working with SDRs and associated test equipment.
Strong understanding of RF signal processing, signal analysis, and wireless communication principles.
Preferred Skills/Qualifications
Board level RF design and layout.
Design considerations for spectral emission compliance (spurious and harmonics emission).
PCB distributed components such as filters, power dividers, couplers, etc.
Understanding of RF synthesizer circuits with wideband VCOs and PLLs.
Impedance matching techniques for in‑circuit components and circuit to antennae.
Robust low‑noise technique for EMI, shielding, and bias line filtering.
Familiarity with C/C++, Python, and Bash in a real‑time operating environment.
Experience in developing hardware test plans, using test equipment.
CAD tools proficiency.
Keysight ADS or Microwave Office AWR for RF circuit design and cascaded system simulation and analysis.
Ansys Electronics or CST Microwave Studio or an equivalent 3D electromagnetic simulation software tool.
Any industry standard SPICE simulation tool for basic analog and time‑domain circuit designs and analysis.
Hands‑on laboratory measurement experience with RF test equipment to analyze and characterize circuits and determine root cause of any failures with component level troubleshooting.
Experience with tools such as Vector network analyzer, Spectrum analyzer, Signal generators, Power meter.
Knowledge of high‑power RF measurement techniques.
Test automation skills (programming test setups via SCPI commands or Python scripts).
Education: Bachelor of science degree or above in Electrical or related field.
Clearance Level Required Clearance not required.

Working Conditions The diversity of work conditions may range from an environment where there is little or no physical discomfort, such as a general office environment or warehouse.
Physical Demands
Must have the ability to stand, climb, occasionally lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
Regularly required to crouch and reach to install/move equipment by bending forward at the waist or by bending legs and spine.
Involves movement between departments, floors, and worksites to facilitate work.
May be performing physical activities including, but not limited to, heavy lifting and moving of items, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.
Other Requirements It is an essential requirement for the person in this role to have a legal right to work in the United States and be eligible to obtain any required Export Authorization and DoD Clearance.
