Join the Weapons Production directorate (ALDWP) as a Deputy Group Leader to support important national security missions at LANL, working in the Plutonium Supply and Disposition Division, Aqueous Recovery and Purification Operations Group (PSD-5). PSD Division leads and executes various key missions to support our nation's plutonium metal production and nuclear material recovery and recycle efforts. We support Material Recovery & Recycle (MR&R) and the Los Alamos Plutonium Pit Production Project (LAP4) modernization efforts to enable the future of plutonium missions.

This role works in a team environment within LANL's nuclear facility to manufacture product, support material movement and glove box operations. The majority of daily work is hands‑on glove box work in support of plutonium processing. Processes in our Plutonium Facility (PF‑4) are performed using detailed operating procedures and work requires extensive knowledge and expertise following Conduct of Operations, nuclear criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological safety and environmental compliance requirements.

Reporting to your Group Leader, you will manage, lead, and support the growth of five teams of 10 to 15 employees each, consisting of engineers, scientists, and technicians. As the Deputy Group Leader you will execute work that supports programmatic milestones and deliverables while setting the standards for excellence and operational effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities

Planning, organizing, and defining strategic objectives.

Establishing scope, schedule, and budget through work package development, resource and performance management, and ensuring worker qualification and authorization.

Delivering quality products and/or services; enforcing adherence to quality standards; balancing productivity goals and quality requirements.

Ensuring administrative and operating procedures are current, understood, and adhered to before releasing work.

Working with facility operations staff to execute work safely, securely, with quality, and in compliance with nuclear facility requirements.

Ensuring direct daily oversight of work, workers, and the work environment.

Serving as the safety responsible line manager over people, equipment, and processes.

Maintaining ongoing communications with line management reporting on work status, deliverables, and commitments.

Directing and overseeing work performed by employees including “on the floor” supervision.

Mentoring and motivating peers.

Providing financial stewardship over budget, procurement, time and labor, travel, and property.

What You Need Minimum Job Requirements

Experience in managing people and/or projects, including planning, organizing, and resource management, and demonstrated work scope, schedules, budgets, and progress tracking.

Demonstrated financial stewardship experience; identification of resource requirements and development of schedules.

Leadership experience: effective supervision, negotiation, conflict resolution, mentoring, and personnel development.

Effective written and oral communication skills; ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers, and to communicate technical issues and solutions to employees peers, and upper management.

Demonstrated experience performing work in a manufacturing environment and maintaining compliance with safety and facility requirements.

Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2 requires a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related science and 4 years of nuclear experience; where education or experience is job‑related, it may be substituted on a case‑by‑case basis.

Desired Qualifications

Experience with nuclear high‑hazard facility operating requirements, safety authorization basis, and Conduct of Operations planning.

Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary team of technicians, engineers, scientists, and professional staff.

Clearance: Active DOE Q Clearance and HRP Certification highly desirable.

Work Location Los Alamos, NM. Work is onsite. The position commitment is one year.
