ENTRY SALARY: $48,673.30 + Odor Pay + ASE & EVT Certification Pay + $1,000 Tool Allowance Each Fiscal Year!

POSITION OPEN UNTIL FILLED

Under direct supervision, the Fleet Mechanic provides skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level in the repair and reconditioning of city vehicles and equipment including other types of specialized apparatus.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains, repairs, services, and reconditions various vehicles and equipment; performs this work on automobiles, Class 1-8 trucks, fire apparatus and equipment, stationary generators, portable generators, garbage trucks, off-road equipment, mowers, and similar apparatus.
  • Inspects various equipment and vehicles to ensure proper function and operation; tests repairs to ensure quality control.
  • Utilizes diagnostic equipment and software; identifies and troubleshoots problems and concerns with vehicles and equipment.
  • Overhauls transmissions, engines, clutches, universals, axle assemblies, etc. as recommended for repair by supervisors.
  • Performs welding and fabrication.
  • Makes service calls and field repairs.
  • Services, repairs, and tests, fire pumps, priming devices, transfer cases, power assists, hydraulic systems, and other specialized fire equipment.
  • Prepares records and writes narrative on work accomplished; ensures the appropriate documentation and delivery of work requests.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment

A valid State driver’s license is required.

Obtain and maintain a Class B CDL permit within six (6) months of hire date & obtain and maintain a Class B CDL within one (1) year of hire date.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma, or G.E.D. Certificate and six (6) months of vocational training AND two (2) years of experience in the servicing, maintenance, and repair of varied automotive equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Knowledge of

  • Methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment for repair, adjustment, overhaul, and maintenance of vehicles and equipment
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the welding trade
  • Record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records
  • General office policies and procedures; computers and general office equipment
  • Equipment maintenance practices and methods

Skill in

  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting in automotive and related electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic equipment
  • Reading and following instructions and procedures in equipment service and repair
  • Performing mechanical service and repair work in adverse conditions
  • Adhering to City rules, regulations, and policies
