Overview

Garbage collectors, or Refuse Material Collectors, gather trash, garbage, and recyclables from houses and businesses along a route. They collect the garbage in their truck and take it to a dump, landfill, or recycling center. A Garbage Collector also has to lift and empty garbage cans and recycling bins by hand, and sometimes operate a hydraulic lift truck that picks up and empties dumpsters. Responsibilities

Collect garbage, recyclables, and other waste along the assigned route. Load and unload waste into the collection vehicle; operate hydraulic lift when applicable. Perform basic maintenance of large machines and trucks as needed. Qualifications

Most employers prefer to hire high school graduates. Basic math skills to read procedure manuals, billing statements, and other papers. Compensation/Notes

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the 2000 median hourly earnings of a garbage collector was $11.83.
