Overview Operates light or heavy equipment and performs semi-skilled to skilled work in the maintenance and construction of streets and trash/recycling operations. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and normally filled by advancement from level I or by directly related experience.
Responsibilities
Equipment Operator I: Under general supervision, operate a range of heavy motor equipment and perform skilled work in construction and maintenance of streets or trash/recycling collection operations.
Equipment Operator II: Responsible for operation of all heavy motor equipment, perform full range of work, maintain proficiency in safe operation under minimal supervision.
Equipment Operator III: Serve as crew leader in maintenance and construction of streets, trash/recycling collection, and special assignments.
Essential Functions (Illustrative)
Street Operations: Perform street and drainage maintenance, break and remove pavement, mix asphalt, pave streets, direct traffic, interpret maps and blueprints.
Environmental Services: Operate heavy trucks and equipment, collect trash/recycle, support routes, read electronic maps, wash/fuel equipment, train others, maintain facility parking, compile reporting data.
Other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
Equipment Operator I: High school diploma or GED; familiarity with heavy motorized equipment preferred.
Equipment Operator II: Proficiency in divisional heavy motorized equipment; equivalent education and experience considered.
Equipment Operator III: One year experience operating all specified equipment and one year as crew leader; acceptable production rate required.
Licensing/Certification Requirements
Equipment Operator I – Streets/Stormwater Operations: Valid Colorado Driver's License; must obtain a Colorado Class B Commercial Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
Equipment Operator I – Environmental Services: Valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver's License with safe driving record.
Equipment Operator II/III – Streets/Stormwater Operations: Valid Colorado Class A Commercial Driver's License with safe driving record.
Equipment Operator II/III – Environmental Services: Valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver's License with safe driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of city policies, construction tools, vehicle operations, and safety regulations.
Skill in operating assigned equipment safely.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, comply with safety instructions, communicate effectively, and maintain working relationships.
Ability to read and interpret maps, signs, and blueprints.

Physical and Mental Requirements Position requires listening, speaking, sitting, standing, walking on uneven surfaces, reaching, bending, lifting and carrying tools weighing 50 pounds or more, exposure to chemicals, confined spaces, heavy vehicle traffic, and loud work environment.
Examinations may include written, oral, and practical exercises. Application will be screened for completeness and accuracy.
Background Screening As a condition of employment, the city of Thornton conducts background investigations, which may include credit report and driving record, as well as drug, physical, and psychological examinations.
