This facility is a large SBS paperboard manufacturing site with approximately 600 thousand tons of capacity, over 700 employees, and has been in operation for almost 65 years. Located on 3,000 acres, the Augusta site operates two paper machines that produce 1,940 tons per day. The Augusta Mill is Clearwater Paper’s largest paperboard facility and critical to the company’s strategy and future success. Augusta, Georgia is a vibrant community with historical attractions, recreational activities, and a variety of experiences nearby. The Masters Tournament and local colleges contribute to a strong regional presence. What You Will Do
The Senior Fiber Buyer works in collaboration with the Fiber Supply Manager to implement strategic wood initiatives for the procurement of certified wood and fiber supply to the Augusta Mill. This role focuses on procurement of roundwood fiber to support the lowest cash cost to the mill. It also serves as a tactical liaison between Procurement, Manufacturing, Accounting, and Wood Suppliers to assist with the ordering, accounting control, compliance, and quality of logs, wood chips, and waste fuel. Procurement of wood chips, sawdust, and all roundwood to support the company’s pulping operation at the lowest possible cash cost; may include selling hogged fuel produced by contract chippers. Act as a liaison to assist with ordering, accounting control, compliance, and quality of logs, wood chips, and waste fuel, including: ticket/invoice reconciliation, contract management, purchase order management, and quality control of inventory transactions. Strategic development and implementation of certified wood procurement initiatives with suppliers in the region; build and maintain supplier relationships and participate in meetings and communications; monitor vendor performance and assist in corrective actions as needed; knowledge of forest management is important. Negotiate procurement contracts for wood fiber and transportation (trucking and rail) to meet demand while achieving cost and value targets; market/trade excess volume as needed. Oversee contract chipper operations for chip production, wood inventory, and rotation. Quality and Compliance
Sample wood/chips to ensure quality expectations are met; document supplier quality attributes and quality improvement plans. Conduct field audits for producer and supplier compliance to certification standards (FSC and SFI) and monitor Chain of Custody (COC) credit tracking and compliance. Prepare for and support certification audits. Strategic Planning
Provide strategic sourcing options, cost impacts, risks, and fiber market conditions. Evaluate economical fiber combinations for pulping as fiber costs change (hardwood vs softwood). Maintain knowledge of wood products industry dynamics in the southern region and understand competitor pricing and strategy. Key Competencies & Attributes
Strong understanding of financial levers in logistics and fiber procurement; ability to lead in a matrixed environment; drive process and change management. Ability to influence, communicate effectively, and build trust; exceptional written and verbal communication; able to present to varied audiences. Strategic thinker who can act tactically and perform hands-on work; ability to evaluate opportunities and create options for desired outcomes. Working knowledge of customer needs, service practices, and decision-making impacts; ability to translate problems into actionable opportunities. Ability to travel within 70-120 miles of the mill; valid driving record required. What You Will Need
Bachelor’s degree in forestry, natural resources, forest business, business, or engineering required. 5+ years’ experience managing fiber supply for a 2.5M CET/year facility, with knowledge of the region’s fiber markets, competition, and suppliers. 5+ years’ familiarity with the wood products market, finances, transportation requirements, and negotiations. Registered forester preferred or ability to obtain registration within 18 months of hire. Ability to work on non-routine purchases requiring analysis to determine best decision; expert knowledge in wood fiber transportation systems. Knowledge of log harvest effects on pulpwood supply and residual fiber production; understanding of lumber and plywood manufacturing operations. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word. PPE required when in forests, sawmills, warehouses, on production floors, or in industrial settings. Travel and driving responsibilities as described above; occasional fatigue and eye strain from computer use. Total Rewards
