JOB SUMMARY The Detail Area Production Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all operations related to processing steel plate into finished parts used for the fabrication of utility poles and structural steel assemblies. This includes direct supervision of plasma, oxy-fuel, beveling, drilling and forming operations. The supervisor ensures accurate material processing, quality compliance, traceability, and adherence to production schedules in coordination with Project Planning, Quality, and other plant departments. The role requires strong leadership, technical proficiency, and a focus on safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement. This position reports to Plant Superintendent.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities.

Supervise Detail Area Personnel – Manage, train, and evaluate operators assigned to plasma, oxy-fuel, beveling, drilling, and forming equipment as well as deburring and parts kitting operations. Provide direction on shift priorities, safety, and quality expectations.

Coordinate Workflow and Scheduling – Work closely with the Plant Superintendent, Materials supervision, and Project Planning to ensure job cut tickets, nesting programs, and material releases are properly executed and meet takt time and delivery requirements.

Program and Material Verification – Confirm that program files, plate grades, thicknesses, and heat numbers match project specifications and release documentation.

First-Article and Quality Verification – Perform first-piece inspections for dimensional accuracy, edge quality, bevel angle, and cut tolerance in accordance with AWS D1.1 and customer drawings.

Traceability and Documentation – Maintain accurate records of cut parts, heat numbers, and nesting layouts to ensure full material traceability from receipt through fabrication.

Maintenance Coordination – Initiate and track maintenance work orders for equipment repair or calibration. Promote preventive maintenance and ensure operators perform daily equipment checks.

Safety Leadership – Enforce strict adherence to safety policies including PPE usage, lockout/tagout, fume extraction, and fire prevention procedures.

Performance and Efficiency Tracking – Monitor key metrics including machine uptime, and downtime. Report results daily to plant management.

Continuous Improvement – Lead 5S and lean initiatives within the Detail Area. Identify opportunities for waste reduction, setup time improvement, and process optimization.

Cross-Department Collaboration – Communicate with Drafting, QA, and Project Management to resolve design, material, or processing issues that impact schedule or quality.

Administrative Reporting – Complete production reports, downtime logs, and shift summaries. Support weekly KPI and safety review meetings.

Other Duties – Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by management.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or GED; minimum 3 years of supervisory experience in a fabrication or steel manufacturing environment.

Equivalent work experience and technical training may be accepted.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Experience in structural steel fabrication and plate processing operations.

Proficient in welding and cutting processes, including plasma, oxy-fuel, and beveling.

Familiarity with AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel requirements.

Knowledge of ERP (Syspro) and nesting software (SigmaNEST) for job control and traceability.

Strong understanding of steel grades (A36, A572-50/65, A871-65, A588-50) and associated mechanical properties.

Ability to interpret blueprints, nesting layouts, and BOMs.

Capable of managing daily production targets, takt time performance, and manpower allocation.

Skilled in coaching, mentoring, and developing production personnel.

Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other data reporting tools.

Bi-lingual English/Spanish proficiency is preferred.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Successful candidates must submit to post offer pre-employment physical examination/medical history check.

Possession of a valid Texas driver's license is a requirement for this job.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

Exposure to extreme heat, welding fumes, grinding dust, and high noise levels typical of heavy fabrication environments.

Moderate to heavy physical activity; standing and walking for long periods and lifting components up to 50 lbs.

Strict compliance with safety procedures and PPE is mandatory.
