Equipment Operator, Journey 2/Lead (PCN 253812M) – Homer Airport, Alaska
Overview Alaska residents only. The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Central Region Highways & Aviation is hiring an Equipment Operator to maintain and operate airport and road infrastructure at Homer Airport. The role involves heavy equipment operation, aircraft rescue and fire fighting support, wildlife management, and compliance with FAA, FHWA, and State regulations.
What You Will Be Doing You will perform airport maintenance at Homer Airport, a State‑maintained Part 139 certified airport. Responsibilities include:
Snow and ice control
Pavement repair and marking
Sweeping, lighting repair, sign installation
Brushing, mowing, ditching, and drainage maintenance
Operating and maintaining heavy equipment such as dump trucks, plows, sweepers, blowers, graders, loaders, and Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles
Conducting runway inspections, FAA compliance, issuing NOTAMs, and performing friction measurements
Wildlife management, including species identification and approved hazing methods
Key Qualifications
Core competencies: Accountability, Conscientiousness, Flexibility, Self‑Management, Teamwork
Valid Class A Alaska Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at time of hire; conditional hire possible for endorsement after 90 days
Pre‑employment drug testing as required by DOT&PF policy
Ability to use firearms/ammunition – must satisfy federal and state regulations; prior convictions may disqualify
APSIN certification (Alaska Public Safety Information Network) – background check required
Experience operating heavy equipment in a regulated environment
Additional Requirements The position requires compliance with DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy, and the candidate must maintain a clean criminal record for APSIN certification. Candidates must also be willing to participate in supplemental questionnaire as part of the application process.
