Overview

Executive Director, Finance & Business Operations at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The ED is responsible for the overall finances for the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology, performs financial analyses and modeling, and assists in setting strategic goals to improve financial performance and identify opportunities across financial, clinical, and academic areas. The ED will support the Departmental Administrator/CFO in coordinating and directing broad financial and management functions to support teaching, medical research, and clinical care. The role provides management with guidance and tools for decision-making based on strategic financial planning and thorough analysis, and serves as a liaison to university and NYP finance offices.

Responsibilities

40% Oversees Department budget, financial planning, and maintenance of financial services

Provides the Departmental Administrator/CFO and senior leadership with a departmental operating budget covering clinical practice, research, education, and fund balance activity; maintains and enhances a comprehensive set of financial reports to inform decision-making.

Oversees clinical revenue cycle operations with internal and external teams to optimize processes and pursue centralization where appropriate.

Serves as a central liaison for the department with CU and NYP finance offices regarding budget and financial operations.

Advises, educates, and acts as an internal consultant for departmental fiscal officers and senior management on budget and financial issues.

25% Forecasting and strategic planning

Ensures integration of sponsored projects and internally supported research operations into budgeting and financial planning through coordination with research administration staff.

Provides project management support for new strategic initiatives and development of business plans to justify new opportunities.

Offers budget analysis, forecasting, and modeling to inform decisions and strategy.

Maintains knowledge of developments and trends in finance and administration, including technological advances.

20% Directs the Path Finance team

Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.

Sets tone and direction for professional development and team dynamics.

Oversees human capital planning.

10% Reporting and compliance

Ensures compliance with contractual, regulatory, hospital, and university policies.

Collaborates with reporting groups and fiscal officers to ensure consistent, professional, and accurate financial reporting and analysis.

5% Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required or equivalent in education and experience, plus seven years of related experience. Master's degree preferred.

Other Requirements

Requires an MBA in accounting or finance-related field and ten years of progressively comprehensive experience in large complex organizations, preferably in a healthcare or medical school setting.

Strong understanding of healthcare or medical school operations and finances including fund accounting, physician practices and grant finances.

Demonstrated skills in problem assessment, resolution and collaborative problem solving in complex, interdisciplinary settings.

Strong customer service skills, with tact and sensitivity in stressful situations.

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

Motivated with a positive and exceptional work ethic.

Excellent oral/written communication, interpersonal, organizational, analytical and computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, databases).

Ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment; take initiative; be flexible; and perform multiple tasks.

Self-starter with aptitude for quantitative analysis and the ability to work with minimal oversight to set priorities and solve problems.

Ability to work closely with diverse senior administrators and faculty.

Experience in developing project plans and strong project management skills.
