Overview Traveling Heavy Equipment & Diesel Mechanic - Construction at Black & Veatch. This field-based role focuses on on-site, hands-on maintenance of construction equipment with emphasis on safety, quality, and continuous professional development.

Key Responsibilities

Use appropriate hand tools (e.g., screwdriver, drill) and power tools (e.g., air drill, impact wrench) to repair, replace, or perform maintenance on equipment.

Receive equipment, document condition, schedule maintenance, and maintain service records.

Operate and inspect machines or heavy equipment to diagnose defects.

Clean, lubricate, and perform routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles; ensure efficient, clean, and safe fueling and oiling.

Diagnose faults or malfunctions using engine diagnostic equipment and calibration devices.

Examine parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges.

Adjust and maintain industrial machinery using control and regulating devices.

Repair and replace damaged or worn parts; fabricate needed parts from sheet metal as required.

Safely dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools.

Clean parts by solvent cleaning methods as appropriate.

Weld or solder broken parts and structural members using electric or gas welders and soldering tools.

Repair, rewire, and troubleshoot electrical systems.

Research, order, and maintain parts inventory for services and repairs.

Test mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance per manufacturers' specifications.

Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.

Fit bearings to adjust, repair, or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment.

Assist equipment operators in completing daily equipment inspections prior to use and ensure safety policies are followed.

Ensure equipment leaving the job site is ready for the next assignment.

May act as a lead and/or supervise other professionals as needed.

Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and support safety processes to achieve zero injuries.

Report accidents and near misses; participate in investigations as needed.

Lead pre-job work planning and safety discussions; identify hazards and take corrective actions.

Understand and respond to safety hazards and warning devices; follow lockout/tagout procedures.

Maintain safe and clean work environment and communicate effectively in writing and verbally.

Management Responsibilities Acts in the capacity of a "lead person" but does not have formal management responsibility for the people they direct.

Preferred Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; some college experience preferred.

Construction equipment maintenance experience.

Proficient written and oral communication; strong data entry and mathematical skills.

Forklift certification.

Mechanical skills and ability to organize data effectively.

Minimum Qualifications

At least 7 years as a Mechanic with strong working knowledge of mechanics (A-level technician).

At least 2 years of experience in a supervisory or managerial role.

Working knowledge of industrial construction equipment, machines, tools, and maintenance.

Unrestricted driver's license with clean MVR; must have or obtain Class A CDL within 6 months of hire.

All necessary tools required for the role.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding, including background checks, drug screen, and motor vehicle records as applicable.

Work Environment / Physical Demands Work Environment

Travel may be required.

Mixture of office, warehouse, laydown yard, and construction site environments.

Work in cramped spaces and in varying temperatures; exposure to dust, wind, snow, rain, and other weather conditions.

Exposure to bright or low lighting and to noise; work around hazardous equipment and at heights.

Physical Demands

Lift and carry up to 50 pounds; stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and maneuver in confined spaces.

Full range of motion; repetitive hand movements and use of tools.

Climb and maintain balance on frameworks, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.

Work up to a 12-hour shift in varying conditions.
