Job Posting: Transportation Engineering Technician Department of Transportation Job Description and Duties

Will consider Junior Engineering Technician. Under the general supervision of a Transportation Surveyor‑Party Chief or Senior Transportation Surveyor incumbent performs complex nonprofessional surveying field/office work. Incumbent works as a field technician performing various surveying duties including the following: digging, clearing of brush, setting of durable monuments, pipe driving, removal of asphalt and operating and maintaining various precise surveying instruments. In an office setting, uses various complex computer applications, computer‑aided drafting and engineering and research products. The incumbent will be assigned work based on departmental needs and could be assigned to either a field survey crew working near traffic or heavy equipment, or in an office setting within District8. This position requires frequent travel throughout the district which includes SanBernardino and Riverside counties. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state vehicle. Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN exam. Duty Statement . Working Conditions

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. This is a position requiring the incumbent to work either in an indoor or an outdoor work environment. Indoor assignments may be in an office building or in trailers. Outdoor assignments will be in various types of terrain and weather conditions that may include exposure to dirt, noise, and walking on uneven surfaces. Required to wear and utilize protective clothing (Personal Protective Equipment, i.e., hard‑hat, work boots, safety vests, eye/hearing protection, and respirator equipment). This position requires field work throughout SanBernardino and Riverside County and travel is required. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state vehicle. In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate: Understand and practice current safety procedures as described in the Code of Safe Surveying Practices and the Caltrans Illness and Injury Prevention Program. Assist with the research, verifying and adjusting of survey data, if directed. May include making and interpreting less difficult survey calculations. Apply and utilize basic principles of trigonometry as used in simple plane and geodetic surveying and within the California Coordinate System.
