Principal Attorney Child Support Services The Position

Under general direction, the Principal Attorney - Child Support Services plans, directs, and/or supervises the activities and personnel performing professional legal work in the Department of Child Support Services. Responsibilities include the prosecution of civil actions to establish, modify, and enforce family support obligations, and/or providing legal representation for the most complex and sensitive cases requiring the highest level of expertise within the County of Sacramento and the State Department of Child Support Services.

Additional Compensation

There is an additional 3.35% Management Differential added to the posted salary for this class.

Knowledge and Abilities

Civil law and procedure especially as it relates to family law and debt collection practice

Civil discovery practice

Federal and state regulations affecting child support collection and compliance issues

Procedures of practice in bankruptcy, workers' compensation, and unemployment insurance courts/hearings

Legal research resources

Principles of organization, management, and supervision of staff and activities

Demonstrate expertise in legal research, writing, analysis, case preparation, trial conduct, and related areas

Demonstrate effective legal representation in highly complex, sensitive, publicized cases and/or legal projects

Establish and maintain the confidence and cooperation of clients, staff, public officials, and the general public

Employment Qualifications

A member in good standing of the California State Bar.

Four years of experience practicing law in California, including at least one year as an Attorney-Criminal Level IV (or higher) or Attorney-Child Support Services IV (or higher) in Sacramento County service. Acceptable areas include family law, criminal law, administrative law, bankruptcy, debt collection practice, or workers' compensation.

Full‑time paid experience unless volunteer experience is expressly acceptable; part‑time paid experience may be prorated.

Pass a security clearance investigation conducted by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office or other designated agency.

Probationary Period 12 months.
