Position Overview:
School social workers support the emotional, social, academic and character growth and well-being of KIPP NYC students and families, helping students succeed in school and prepare for self-sufficient, successful, and happy lives. Responsibilities
Provide direct services to the school community, including regular one-on-one and group counseling for students and families. Provide crisis intervention as needed. Manage, track, and document counseling interactions and schedules; set goals with students and monitor progress. Help students work toward high school graduation, college matriculation, and self-sufficiency; collaborate daily with supervisors, colleagues, and teachers. Coordinate referral processes for social services, partnerships, and special education services; document IEPs and meet with students with mandated counseling on IEPs. Develop and maintain external partnerships; refer individuals and families to external resources; alert authorities for suspected child abuse when necessary; monitor delivery of external resources and services; administer records and compliance activities. Design and coordinate student and family engagement activities, including home visits, workshops, and supporting disciplinary processes with the Principal, Deans, and teachers. Participate in department and faculty meetings; collaborate with Student Response Teams to develop supports for students with challenging behaviors; chaperone events; and provide staff with recommendations on approaches for working with struggling students. Promote school culture through character education; meet with parents in English and Spanish; establish professional rapport with students, staff, and families; maintain ethical standards and confidentiality; ensure a safe counseling environment. Commit to ongoing professional growth. Qualifications
Strong interpersonal skills and a team-oriented, mission-driven approach; embody traits such as zest, grit, hope, love, social intelligence, gratitude, and humor. Passion for contributing to a collaborative school culture; track record of personal and professional success; extensive knowledge of adolescent development. Experience with therapeutic modalities related to children and families in the communities KIPP NYC serves, including trauma assessment and treatment; prior work in a school setting or with teenagers/young adults. MSW or Master’s degree in a counseling-related discipline; oral and written fluency in Spanish is highly preferred. Compensation & Benefits
KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary in the range of $70,829 – $142,270. Salaries are determined on an equitable compensation scale based on years of experience, NYS certification/licensure, and tenure within KIPP. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, generous time off (including school vacation weeks, sick and personal days, and extended summer break), up to 12 weeks of 100% parental leave, backup child/e elder care, employer-paid life insurance and disability, and professional development funds and tuition reimbursement.
