Job Description And Duties Under the direction of a Senior Transportation Engineer in the Office of Construction Administration, Safety, Traffic Management, and Storm Water Pollution Branch, the Transportation Engineer (Civil) performs a wide variety of professional engineering work in an office and/or field setting. The incumbent may receive direction for work tasks from a lead person, the District 12 Construction Storm Water Coordinator and Safety Coordinators.

Minimum Qualifications and Exams Candidates are required to review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification. If you meet MQs under Pattern II and require the TE Civil in-person written hurdle exam, DO NOT TAKE the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle. Candidates who take the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle may negatively impact their hiring eligibility. Please contact the exam unit at askexams@dot.ca.gov for additional information prior to taking the online examination.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Transportation Engineer (Civil) exam. Those without current eligibility must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. To apply for the exam, search the classification title on CalCareers.

Special Requirements

Appointment to Range D (Resident Engineer) requires a valid Professional Engineer (Civil) license issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.

Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

The position requires continuous written and oral communication with the storm water coordinator, supervisor, resident engineers, construction field staff, environmental, design, and other units. Travel may be required. A valid driver's license is required.

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) The SOQ serves as documentation of each applicant’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. The SOQ must be typed, no more than two pages, 12-point Arial font, and include numbered responses to the following questions in order:

Based on the Duty Statement, explain why you are the best candidate with specific examples.

Describe understanding of Stormwater program challenges and how you would apply experience to achieve results.

Describe field construction safety and traffic management experience and how you will apply it.

How does your education, knowledge, and experience make you the most qualified candidate?

What goals do you hope to achieve in this assignment for yourself and the Division?
