Traveling Heavy Equipment & Diesel Mechanic - Construction at Black & Veatch Req Id: 110230 • Opportunity Type: Staff • Relocation eligible: No • Full-time Traveling role requiring work across construction sites with emphasis on safe, efficient operation and maintenance of heavy equipment. Responsibilities
Use hand and power tools to repair, replace or maintain equipment. Receive equipment, document condition, schedule maintenance, and keep service records. Operate and inspect machines to diagnose defects. Clean, lubricate, and perform routine maintenance; ensure safe fueling and oiling of equipment. Diagnose faults using engine diagnostic equipment and calibration devices. Inspect parts for damage or wear with calipers and gauges; adjust and maintain machinery. Repair and replace damaged parts; fabricate parts from sheet metal as needed. Dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment safely; weld or solder as required. Repair, rewire, and troubleshoot electrical systems. Research, order, and maintain parts inventory; test equipment after repair for proper performance. Read operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings; fit bearings and adjust equipment. Assist operators with daily inspections; ensure safety policies are followed. Ensure equipment leaving site is job-ready; may lead or supervise others and participate in continuous improvement. Participate in safety processes and pre-job planning; enforce lockout/tagout procedures and report hazards promptly. Maintain effective verbal and written communication; perform basic math as required. Qualifications
Minimum 7 years as a Mechanic with strong knowledge of mechanics; 2+ years as a supervisor or manager. Working knowledge of industrial construction equipment and tools; valid tools of the trade. Unrestricted driver’s license and clean MVR; Class A CDL within 6 months of hire. At least 18 years of age; pre-employment checks as required (background, drug screen, driving records). Preferred Qualifications & Skills
High school graduate with some college experience. Attention to detail; strong written and verbal communication; data entry; mathematical proficiency. Forklift certification; strong mechanical skills. Work Environment & Physical Demands
Travel may be required; mix of office, warehouse, laydown yard, and project site. Work in cramped spaces; extreme temperatures; exposure to dust, wind, rain, and noise; hazardous equipment; high places. Lift up to 50 pounds; stand, kneel, bend, and climb; shift work up to 12 hours in varying conditions. Benefits & Equity
