Under the general supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Manager II, acting as Region Manager, the Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent is in charge of highway and functional maintenance crews maintaining major interstate highways, and state routes. Responds to natural, and other disasters. Requires a Class C driver license. Emergency response is required outside of employee's normal work hours. Duties include, but are not limited to: Utilizes the Integrated Maintenance Management System and Material Management System to plan, schedule and monitor work activities, evaluate performance of Supervisors, and crews. equipment, materials, and unit costs. Ensures work conforms to the standards set forth in the Maintenance Manual and is in accordance with policies, procedures, and instructions from the Department. Ensures proper procurement procedures are followed to obtain materials and supplies. Prepares estimates on regular and special maintenance work, and passes on difficult maintenance and minor construction operational problems. Conducts safety investigations, compiles reports and maintains discipline within the unit. Responds to emergencies, including storms, natural, and other disasters. Attends weekly Superintendent meetings at the Region Office, and conducts Supervisor meetings. Attends various training classes and meetings throughout the State. Selects personnel through the interview process. Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the CALTRANS MAINTENANCE AREA SUPERINTENDENT exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. This position is based in an office with climate control and artificial lighting. The incumbent will use a personal computer with keyboard, mouse and monitor. Will spend considerable time in the field, both traveling to and from work sites and on foot. Work locations may be in any part of the assigned area. Weather conditions will vary widely from hot and mostly dry summers, with occasional heavy thundershowers, to wet and cold winters. Temperatures will range from well below freezing in winter to consistently above 100 degrees in the summer. The incumbent must be prepared to work outdoors in inclement weather and extreme temperatures. Minimum Requirements
