Summary The City of Charlotte’s Innovation & Technology Department is seeking a skilled and motivated Technology Support Coordinator to provide advanced technical support for our public safety agencies, including Police, Fire, and Animal Care & Control. This position serves as a technical resource and liaison between I&T and departmental customers—configuring, deploying, and maintaining technology that keeps first responders connected and operational.
The ideal candidate combines strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities with hands‑on experience in IT hardware, software, networking, and vehicle‑based technology systems.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the primary point of contact between Innovation & Technology and assigned Public Safety departments—building strong partnerships and responsive support.
Install, configure, and maintain computers, mobile data terminals, modems, routers, and related technology, including in‑vehicle systems and wiring.
Troubleshoot complex hardware, software, and connectivity issues with persistence and attention to detail.
Manage and track equipment through its full lifecycle, ensuring assets, configurations, and documentation remain accurate and current.
Communicate system updates, outages, and process changes clearly to departmental users and leadership.
Assist with small‑scale projects, technology upfits, and process improvements that enhance efficiency and reliability.
Contribute to team development and training by sharing knowledge, documenting procedures, and helping shape a consistent service approach.
Support technology budget planning and coordination as requested.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and five (5) years of related IT experience; or
Associate’s degree and three (3) years of related IT experience; or
Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of related IT experience.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong working knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems, networking, and vehicle wiring, including DC power distribution and data cabling principles.
Advanced troubleshooting and analysis skills.
Familiarity with cellular wireless technologies and connectivity tools.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills.
Ability to balance multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently or as part of a team.
Commitment to exceptional customer service and collaborative problem solving.
Preferred Experience
Experience with in‑vehicle wiring, including DC power distribution and data cabling for modems, routers, and other peripheral installations.
Skilled in the use of voltmeters and other testing equipment.
Comfortable using power tools and hand tools for equipment installation.
Hands‑on experience supporting Sierra Wireless MG90 and CradlePoint mobile routers.
Familiarity with Panasonic Toughbook CF‑33, CF‑G2, and FZ‑55 laptops or similar ruggedized devices.
Experience supporting technology in public safety, field, or mobile environments.
Working Conditions Work is performed in both office and field environments. Occasional travel to police, fire, and other public safety sites and vehicles is required. Exposure to outdoor conditions, confined spaces, and shop or vehicle environments may occur.
Conditions of Employment The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.
Final candidates must pass a pre‑employment drug‑screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
