Assistant Engineer – $90,526.80 – $121,307.26 annually DOQ

Associate Engineer – $99,925.28 – $133,901.04 annually DOQ

Civil Engineer – $107,608.39 – $144,196.21 annually DOQ

About the Opportunity The City of Ventura is seeking a skilled and motivated Engineer to join our Transportation Division. This role supports transformative projects that enhance safety, connectivity, and mobility citywide. Open to Assistant, Associate, or Civil Engineer-level professionals, the position offers opportunities to contribute to high‑profile projects such as the new traffic signal system, the Main Street Bridge replacement, and the Santa Paula Branch Line (Rails with Trails) corridor improvements.

We’re looking for a collaborative, proactive, and technically skilled engineer who thrives in a dynamic, community‑focused environment. The ideal candidate will effectively engage with colleagues, consultants, government agencies, and the public, delivering innovative transportation solutions with professionalism and sound judgment.

Key Responsibilities

Planning, managing, and performing technical studies, investigations, and research for transportation and public works projects.

Serving as project manager or assistant on capital projects, monitoring scope, budgets, and schedules.

Designing, reviewing, and overseeing traffic systems, including signals, street lighting, sidewalks, medians, and parking facilities.

Managing traffic control device inventories, permits, surveys, and compliance with state and federal funding requirements.

Coordinating with government agencies and responding to public inquiries to ensure safe and efficient transportation solutions.

The Ideal Candidate – Preferred Qualifications

Possess professional engineering experience, ideally including traffic signal design and timing.

Demonstrate knowledge of traffic engineering principles, including the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD).

Communicate clearly and confidently, including presenting information at City Council meetings and engaging with the public.

Support active transportation initiatives, promoting bicycle and pedestrian programs within the city.

Manage transportation grants and projects, including experience with Caltrans‑funded programs.

Collaborate effectively with colleagues, consultants, and stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.

Minimum Qualifications – Required A combination of training, education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, Traffic or Transportation Engineering, or a related field, and depending on assignment, qualifying experience as described below.

Assistant Engineer One year of professional engineering experience in the assigned area. A California Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate and two years of college may substitute for the Bachelor’s Degree. A California Engineering‑in‑Training certificate is highly desirable.

Associate Engineer Three years of professional engineering experience in the assigned area, preferably with a public agency, or two years of experience equivalent to that of an Assistant Engineer with the City of Ventura. A California Engineering‑in‑Training certificate is highly desirable.

Civil Engineer Three years of professional engineering experience in the assigned area, preferably with a public agency. Registration as a California Civil Engineer is required at time of appointment.

Licenses / Certificates License Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license may be required.

Certificates

Assistant/Associate Engineer: A California “Engineer in Training” (EIT) certificate is highly desirable.

Civil Engineer: Registration as a California Civil Engineer is required at the time of appointment.
