Social Worker – MSW / LCSW (Nights Shift)
Location: Riley Hospital –

Shift: Full‑time nights.
Join our Dedicated Pediatric and Adult Behavioral Health Team! Indiana University Health Riley Hospital seeks a compassionate and experienced Master’s Level Social Worker with a permanent LCSW license to provide vital psychosocial support and clinical interventions during night shifts. The role involves face‑to‑face patient and family interactions, crisis management, discharge planning, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care.
Position Overview
Meet patients and families face‑to‑face, providing assessments, counseling, and resource coordination.
Assist in developing educational materials for patients, families, and healthcare teams.
Serve as a resource and role model for students, interns, LBSWs, and LSWs.
Collaborate with the clinical team to develop individualized treatment plans addressing psychosocial issues and needs, including consulting on mental health diagnoses.
Interpret and communicate complex patient and family needs, modeling caring and professional practices to caregivers.
Assess psychosocial risk factors by evaluating prior functioning, support systems, reactions to illness, and coping strategies.
Counsel patients and families regarding emotional, social, and financial impacts of health conditions or disabilities.
Access and mobilize community and family resources to meet patient needs.
Conduct mental health assessments upon physician referral.
Facilitate complex discharge planning to ensure safe transfer to appropriate care levels.
Serve as a point person for cases involving child abuse/neglect, elder abuse/neglect, institutional abuse, and domestic violence.
Act as a liaison between IU Health and protective services (APS/DCS).
Provide crisis intervention, de‑escalation, and behavioral health services, including addiction assessments and psychiatric referrals.
Support management of dangerous or potentially dangerous situations with leadership and clinical intervention.
Use principles of interviewing victims, perpetrators, families, and significant others to gather critical information.
Provide intervention at end‑of‑life, guardianship (temporary/permanent), foster care, and adoption cases.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education:
Master’s Degree in Social Work required.
Licensure:
Permanent Indiana license as an LCSW required.
Certifications:
Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or equivalent de‑escalation training required within 6 months of hire.
Experience:
Relevant healthcare, mental health, or community‑based experience preferred.
Knowledge & Skills:
Evidence‑based psychosocial assessment, short‑term therapeutic counseling, crisis intervention for mental health and substance use disorders.
Knowledge of disease processes and human behavior related to health social needs.
Complex discharge planning skills for safe patient transfers.
Legal mandates for child and adult protective services (state and county).
Principles of growth and development across the lifespan, including end‑of‑life care.
Ability to identify decision‑makers and lead goals of care conversations to optimize patient throughput and care quality.
Experience adapting services for diverse populations across geographic, cultural, and financial backgrounds.
Strong relationships with hospital administrators, healthcare teams, law enforcement, APS/DCS, schools, probation, and community agencies.
Computer literacy and proficiency in electronic medical record documentation.
