The ESOL Coordinator is responsible for implementing the New York State Office of New Americans ESOL Opportunity Center at the USCRI Albany Field Office. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop and schedule ONA Opportunity Center programming in accordance with funding specifications and limitations, including instruction at pre-literate/beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Proactively recruit and select program participants, members, and volunteers using appropriate promotional or marketing methods, such as individual letters, brochures, or presentations at meetings. Work cooperatively with other component coordinators to plan education services integrated with health, mental health, nutrition, parent involvement, and social services. Ensure that files and documentation are complete, accurate, and confidentially maintained. Ensure that teaching staff and volunteers are productive and engaging with students, meeting all contract requirements, and fostering a positive team environment. Attend stakeholder meetings and foster strong working relationships with community-based organizations and partner agencies; provide consistent communication to ensure coordinated services and development of client and funding opportunities. Ensure that refugees are served in a linguistically and culturally appropriate manner and provide education and advocacy when necessary. Administer academic and language assessments to evaluate learners’ progress and language acquisition. Supervise part-time ESOL instructors and volunteers, ensuring quality instruction and support to students. All duties and responsibilities are essential job functions. The described duties are not exhaustive, and other job-related duties may be assigned as required by the supervisor(s). REQUIREMENTS
Certificate in teaching ESOL or two years of demonstrated ESOL teaching experience. A Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Education or a related discipline is preferred but not required. Availability and willingness to work on a variable schedule. Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate and build lasting relationships with program and field office staff. Sensitivity to the development stages and well-being of students. Proficiency in MS Word, MS Access, MS Excel, and database programs. Ability to facilitate group discussions, analyze situations, and draw conclusions. Highly adaptable and flexible with the ability to multi-task and prioritize in a demanding work environment. Dedication to human rights of refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers, and displaced people. A good sense of humor and a pleasant, diplomatic manner is desirable. TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Satisfactory completion of USCRI’s Orientation and Training. Satisfactory completion of funder-required trainings upon hire and annually. Complete additional training as identified by supervisor or Human Resources. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity. Use of repetitive motion, prolonged sitting and standing, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds, bending, pulling, and carrying. Quantitative/mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, standard measurements).
