What you will do This is advanced professional work supervising and directing the work of child protective investigators and support staff. The primary duty of the employee(s) in the position (s) allocated to this class is to spend the majority of the time communicating with, motivating, training and evaluating employees.

How you will make an impact

Supervise, plan and direct workloads, work flows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization of subordinate staff in the delivery of protecting children, working with families and conducting investigations of alleged abused, abandoned, neglected or exploited children.

Develop performance standards and job duty expectations with investigators, review standards and plan for continuous improvement.

Communicate investigators’ compliance with these expectations on a regular basis and provide coaching by acknowledging outstanding performance and giving suggestions for improvement.

Evaluate employees against established standards and take necessary corrective action.

Promote career development of investigators by ensuring each individual receives the proper training and leads cross‑training on investigative skills.

Review casework, assessments and safety plans with investigators, and provide consultation and direction to ensure appropriateness, clarity, quality, thoroughness and proper documentation.

Use management tools in the information system(s) to monitor open cases and manage workflow for steady progress to meet timelines and prevent backlog.

Ensure that CPI operations are within legislative authority and comply with required federal, state rules and regulations.

Identify improvements and implement adjustments needed for program effectiveness and efficiency.

Facilitate and participate in the hiring, promoting, demoting, discipline and/or dismissal of employees.

Collect, analyze and report data regarding child protective investigations.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with organizations and other agencies involved in investigations such as community providers, Children’s Legal Services, law enforcement, medical personnel, schools, and other resources.

Ensure effective communication with deaf or hard‑of‑hearing customers or companions in accordance with the ADA and/or Section 504 and manage service records and report data and resources and training needs to the designated program point of contact.

Qualifications

Criteria 1:

A high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Four years of law enforcement experience or active military service (honorably discharged or currently serving).

Minimum 2 years of Child Welfare Experience, preferred in Child Protective Investigations.

Current/Active Child Welfare Certification credentials from the Florida Certification Board.

Valid driver license and possession of a private vehicle for work activities.

Proof of vehicle registration and insurance coverage will be required. Vehicle insurance allowance is provided.

Criteria 2:

AA Degree or 60+ credit hours from an accredited college or university.

Two years of professional work experience (examples: Guardian Ad Litem, Family Support Worker, Group Home Worker, EMT, Case Manager, etc.) OR two years of law enforcement experience or active military service.

Minimum 2 years of Child Welfare Experience, preferred in Child Protective Investigations.

Current/Active Child Welfare Certification credentials from the Florida Certification Board.

Valid driver license and possession of a private vehicle for work activities.

Vehicle insurance allowance is provided.

Criteria 3:

A bachelor’s degree (at the time of application). Bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work or related field preferred.

Minimum 2 years of Child Welfare Experience, preferred in Child Protective Investigations.

Current/Active Child Welfare Certification credentials from the Florida Certification Board.

Valid driver license and possession of a private vehicle for work activities.

Vehicle insurance allowance is provided.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of theories and practice of child protection, counseling, social work, investigations, and assessments; professional ethics; physical and behavioral indicators of abuse; effective management skills; court procedures; data collection and analysis; supervision techniques; family‑centered interviewing and counseling; investigative techniques; observation techniques.

Skill in direct observation of investigator abilities; considering child development; recognition of abuse indicators; conducting risk and safety investigations; maintaining well‑executed case files; writing accurate investigative reports; developing individual case plans; evaluating investigator performance; analyzing service program effectiveness; planning, organizing, and coordinating work assignments; communicating effectively; establishing working relationships; supervising staff; applying laws, rules, regulations; using computer systems; demonstrating group dynamics; staff caseings; conducting thorough case staffings and meetings.

Physical agility tasks: ambulate in varied terrains, assist evacuation during emergencies, normal vision/hearing, repetitive movements, bending, twisting, lifting up to 30 lbs, assisting clients, sitting/standing without break, work 16‑hour shifts, drive vehicle to transport clients during day and night.

Additional Information/Requirements This position will require night, weekend, and holiday work. It has also been designated as an essential position. Incumbents may be exposed to hazardous field conditions and are expected to work during emergencies or natural disasters beyond normal hours.
