Responsibilities Under general direction of the Chief, Office of Corridor & System Planning (OCSP), a Supervising Transportation Planner, the Senior Transportation Planner serves as the System Planning Branch Chief. Key duties include:
Leading the identification of community, transit, bicycle, pedestrian, climate, freight, and roadway needs on the state highway system.
Developing and implementing performance‑based planning studies that identify current and future deficiencies.
Creating workflows, guidance, and tools to enhance statewide system planning efforts.
Coordinating with OCSP, Modal Offices, Divisions, and Districts to ensure continuous communication, cooperation, and knowledge sharing.
Managing staff workload assignments, hiring, training, and documentation such as database filing systems, contracts, and legislative analysis.
Providing support to other Senior Transportation Planner assignments as required by the Office Chief.
Ensuring planning solutions align with the Governor’s Executive Orders, California Action Plan for Transportation Infrastructure (CAPTI), California Transportation Plan (CTP), Caltrans Strategic Plan, and other relevant policies.
Qualifications Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Transportation Planner exam. For those not currently eligible (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotion) and/or new to state civil service, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible. Applicants must meet the Minimum Qualifications stated in the Classification Specification.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State‑owned or leased vehicle.
Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required.
The Statement of Qualifications documents each applicant’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. Each question must be numbered and addressed in the same order as provided, typed, no more than two pages, 12‑point Arial font, and submitted with the application.
