The Department of Campus Recreation within the Division of Student Life at West Virginia University seeks a positive, collaborative, and dynamic individual to join our team as our Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Youth Programs. Reporting directly to the Associate Director of Programs, the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Youth Programs is responsible for the development, coordination, implementation, and daily operations of all aspects of the West Virginia University Summer Camp and Competitive Sports programs with collaboration from their direct report coordinators. This individual will be a key team member of the Campus Recreation Department, which provides aquatic programs, club sports, fitness/wellness, intramurals, youth programs, special events, extramurals, and collaborative programs.

Program Management

Responsible for the administration, implementation leadership, and supervision of the overall Summer Camp, Club Sports, and Intramural Sports.

Oversee the development of the policies and procedures for all Summer Camp, Club Sports, and Intramural Sports.

Compile, prepare, and maintain records for all programs of responsibility such as budget, participation numbers, injuries, and incident reports.

Oversee the development of program manuals and a comprehensive departmental staff training program.

Responsible for inventory and maintaining all program equipment and maintenance.

Assist in the development and implementation of risk management protocols for areas of responsibility.

Become proficient in the use of Fusion, IMLeagues, and DSE as a management tool for Campus Recreation specifically as it relates to program administration.

Manage facility preparation for home contests, preseason preparation, master competitive schedules of clubs, weekly practice schedules and post-season playoff involvement.

Provide oversight for scheduling and coordination of all Intramural Sports leagues, Club Sport events, as well as youth programming.

Oversee the management of 36 Club Sport programs and their coaching/instructional staff.

Primary point of contact for external facility relationships and contracts including Mylan Park, the Aquatic and Track complex, BOPARC Ice Rink, WV Gymnastics Training Center, and WVU Athletic Department facilities.

Responsible for the communication and scheduling of the WVU Medicine Athletic Trainers for their office hours, club practice/game oversight, and billing process.

Assist Youth Programs Coordinator in the development and oversight of all aspects of Summer Camp.

Maintain knowledge of local, regional, and national trends in competitive sports programs and youth camps.

Work evening and weekends when necessary, regarding department-wide special events.

Understand and represent the mission and vision of West Virginia University Campus Recreation Department.

Collaborate with Marketing Strategist on all marketing and promotion programs and services for programs responsible within established timelines, policies, and procedures.

Personnel Management

Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of fulltime, graduate assistants, and student staff for Competitive Sports and Youth Programs.

Train, advise, and provide leadership development to all club officers and their coaches/instructors to assist them in the administration of individual club activities, and successful compliance with campus and governing bodies' policies.

Administer employee and participant related disciplinary action.

Budget Management

Research, develop, monitor, and adhere to the Competitive Sports and Youth program budgets.

Oversee program payroll, tracking, and approvals.

Responsible for the inventory and purchasing of equipment for programming needs as well as individual club needs.

Research & Assessment

Evaluate all Club Sport, Intramural Sport, and Summer Camp programs and services to determine overall effectiveness and satisfaction to decide on possible changes as deemed appropriate.

Assist in the development and implementation of the overall Campus Recreation research and assessment agenda to include development of student and program learning outcomes.

Other

Actively participate on a variety of Campus Recreation, University, and national association committees as assigned.

Collaborate with Campus Recreation staff to help department make the impact mentioned in our mission and vision statements.

Assist with night and weekend department special events and programs when needed.

Attend and participate in University, Divisional, and Departmental events, programs, and training.

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Higher Education, or other relevant field

Required:

Minimum of 4 years of experience working in a collegiate recreation environment or similar. Graduate Assistant position may be included in experience.

Preferred:

A minimum of 3-5 years full-time experience working in a college or university recreation environment with particular emphasis on a student development driven program, during which time the applicant has acquired and demonstrated the ability to perform the essential duties of the position.

Preferred:

Two (2) years of officiating experience

Demonstrated ability to work with students, student organizations, faculty/student committees, different government agencies, and community groups.

Demonstrated ability to lead diverse groups of individuals employing flexibility in management techniques, appropriate to a variety of situations.

Demonstrated experience and abilities to work as part of a professional team that collaborates effectively with colleagues.

Analytical skills to identify problems, assess alternatives, and render consistent, logical decisions.

Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to write concise, logical reports.

The ability to thrive in an environment that values high expectations, accountability, and balanced lifestyles.
